‘Letter Quest: Grimm’s Journey Remastered’ for Steam has you steer a small grim reaper through hordes of ghosts and barbarian bunnies on the search for a good slice of pizza. The gameplay is all about grabbing letters from a 3x5 grid of scrabble tiles worth various points to spell words to empower each swing of your scythe. It’s a well-implemented RPG with branching paths, a store to upgrade your weapons and potions, stackable books with their own experience meters, temporary status buffs and hangman-style treasure chests. There’s four ranks of difficulty for the main forty levels and an endless mode.

Tailoring my attack is fun, but I’d also have enjoyed more story. Many ranked challenges have limits on words or time. Harder enemies can poison your tiles and change your letters and heal themselves and enchant your tiles to eat their neighbors. They might be immune unless you use a corner tile of the letter grid or take eight times more damage if hit by one of the crystal tiles that appear in your rows. Programming this smooth cartoon art in Unity probably posed some interesting challenges. The unmastered version lacks the catchy music but also runs on mobile devices.
