Miner in my own opinion.

I go with geologist for them money, I only use ores on my own recipes and to upgrade weapons.

I suggest picking Geologist now — so you can become an Excavator at level 10.

Both have its benfits... Miner makes you have a lot of extra ore, but ore is actually really easy to get anyway... You can also get double coal later which is nice (though you can just make coal).

Geologist gets you more gems and more importantly geodes at level 10...

I went miner and later game I wish I had gone geologist for the double geodes..

are geodes that useful? once you've filled out the library with artifacts/minerals, geode stuff is pretty much just for gifts or selling, right? (aside from certain crafts, or is that why you want them?)
If the reason is extra cash, is it worth it compared to saving time when you need to go out for ore and also get double coal (if you choose this path)?

Miner = late game benefits (Iridium Nodes), Geologist = early mid game income booster (Double diamonds = extra 750 gold per diamond node). Depends on your play style.

On my current playthrough I used Geologist, which was fun because I had an extra 20,000 by Summer 1 Year 1 to buy more seeds and max out my farm. That beubg said, I don't have access to as much Iridium Ore as I had in my previous run (Probably sitting on 60-80 less Iridium Ores at the moment), but overall I have a lot more gold (3 mil at Spring 13 Year 2).

Iridium ore is really easy to get tho, if you go on a lucky day to the desert cave the big slimes drop them like crazy.

So yeah take whichever you want, both of them end up becomming useless at late game when you're drowing in money because ancient fruit wine is OP.

Not when you need 500 Iridium Bars by end of Summer Y2 :P, also Ancient Fruit Wine becomes more practical to have up after Y2, if you want to get 10 million + gold before end of Y2, stick to farming, mining and fishing (since Barrels got nerfed).

If you need that much it's because you are obviously planning a grand scale farm and know what you are doing. In that case you'd already have the funds to buy stones like a madman and reach really low depth in the cave to mine all the iridium ore you need.

Starfruit wine is even more OP.

Yes, considering the opening post very clearly states what the discussion is about. "I've reached level 5, what profession should I choose?" Then they present the two choices, and ask people to help them pick.

I went Geologist and have since been rolling in money after lucky days in the mine. After you repair the bus and make it to the bottom of the mines, the best way to farm iridium is to dedicate a day to the Skull Cavern. Carry a stack of stone and create as many staircases as possible before beginning to farm, enough that you're out of stone. By this point you should be at around floor 110 and iridium ore will be spawning like crazy on a good, lucky day. Spend all day farming iridium, and you should come out of it with quite a respectable haul.
