Sebastian is her child from her first marriage / partner. She later married Demetrius and they had Maru.

He was from Robin's previous marriage/partner. Demetrius is his step-dad and Marius is his half sister.

I'm guessing English isn't your first language. Most wouldn't use "mulatto" at all, for one. For two, you must have missed the fact entirely that Sebastian is, in fact, only a half-brother of Maru and that Demetrius has books about being a Step-father lying around.

I'm a native English speaker and that was the first word I learned for that (and the only one I still know that specifically refers to that particular pairing). I'm afraid to ever use it, though, because for some reason a voice in my head tells me "it might be considered offensive and you just don't know that".

So instead I tend to use "mocha" or "caramel". =P

Last time I heard "mulatto" was in 1912 (during the events of Bioshock Infinite :P)

I like "mocha" and "caramel" since both are tasty. (and anyone who says differently obviously has no taste and his opinion is ♥♥♥♥♥ by default)

Most likely, I learned it as part of history class in elementary school, and then nothing later ever informed me that it was different.

Of course, I grew up in the southern U.S., so my early education wasn't exactly rife with cultural sensitivity. (And some of it probably hadn't been updated since 1912, either.)

You could just say "mixed-race". Although Americans tend to consider anyone still dark enough not to pass as white to still just be "black", anyway... Maru's just "Halle Berry black".
