How Do You Get A Steady Supply Of Hay
I have a HUGE hay shortage, I've tried planting small patches of grass and letting them grow, but it's still not enough. Any tips? I have 4 chickens, 2 ducks, 1 duckling, and 2 cows.

Start out by going to the ranch where you got your animals, and buy a sht-ton of hay. That will last you until your grass grows.

Unless you're going to buy hay straight from Marnie, the best way is to buy a lot of grass starters from Pierre and plant them around. I just waited until I had a steady income and bought 3 silos full from Marnie. Unless you have a ton of animals, you really shouldn't go through hay all that quickly.

If you have a coop that has not been upgraded, you can take hay from the dispenser and put it in a chest. I never let grass go uncut before winter sets in. Fill your silo with hay, then go to your coop (without the automatic dispenser), empty the silo and put that hay in a chest. Refill silo, repeat as necessary. Do that during the spring, summer and fall and you'll never have a hay shortage in winter!

I have some odd corners of my farm fenced off where I grow grass. When it's mostly grown I go in there and chop about half of it down and leave the other half to regrow. As long as you don't have a ton of animals, this works fine. I also let my animals outside to eat grass instead of hay.
Sell everything for hay.

I did not cut any grass at the start so I had plenty the first year but as others said buy hay from marnie and buy grass from pierre, feed your animals the hay and do not let them out until the starter grass you bought has spread enough, usually spreads one tile per day as long as there is no grass around it so space the ones you buy out a little bit and watch them take over

This is what I did.
I had to buy some hays at first.
Then I bought 3 or 4 grass and planted them here and there, waited until they grow, picked some of them, but not all the grass and let the rest continues to grow.
I freed my animals on the farm and some of them ate the grass.
This way, you just have to give 4-6 hays out of 8(or 12 for delux barn) hays.
At the end of Fall, pick all of the grass and you'll get about 300 to 400.
If you run out of hays at the end of the Winter, you don't have choice but to buy them I think.
I hope this'll help you.

if you buy grass starters, be sure not to plant them right next to each other. Spread them out; with 4-5 spaces between. As they grow, they fill in the space. When you cut them down; allways leave a few small patches to continue to grow and spread.

Marnie sells hay for 50g apiece. If you can afford it, this is the most time-efficient way to get hay.

Thanks for all the replies!

I'm confused with it as well. I have one barn, one coop, full of animals each, they all have hay in their homes, I have 4 silos (1200/1200), 160 hay in my backpack, and half of my map is grass. So, winter will arrive and all the hay will be gone? How will the hay from silos be transferred to the coop/barn during winter?

Only the grass growing will be gone.
Your hay is stored in a ''chest'' in your coop/barn, and you can take them out by clicking on it.
