You don't need to give "love" gifts on birthdays, just "like" gifts. You get 2 stars regardless of like or love status of the gift for birthdays.

He likes literally every "vegetable" (as in, says "vegetable" in the tooltip) except wheat. He also likes jelly, non-void eggs, mayonaise, and most cooking besides eggs (he prefers to drink them raw, I guess).

I just hand him a radish or ear of corn or eggplant or something, and call it a day.

He loves eggs, and they are cheap and you can pick one up on the way to seeing him. I gave him nothing but eggs and ended up marrying him within the year.

Enh, I prefer vegetables. Eggs sell for 150 g apiece once mayonaissed, or can be cooked into a bunch of other valuable foods. Corn, meanwhile, can be planted to produce tons through the Summer and Fall, and while useful for oil, is generally cheap enough for tossing away on gifts.

Alternately, turn all your chubs and carp into sashimi.
