They're pretty tall so you of course need to take that into consideration, if they're blocking seeing something you want to be able to spot easier from a distance. And then of course some people want them to look pretty or more natural in the layout.
I'm not worrying about my farm being pretty in my current game though I may try a screenshot worthy one later :D
This is where i put mine as well, it's a perfect spot and doesn't ruin the view of anything.
Alternatively, if your stable or well isn't right there, between the teleport shrine thingy and where your cat/dog sleeps, there's a spot for a silo there. Technically, one silo is enough, if you have a chicken coop. You can pull out all the hay, and toss it in a storage chest, then cut more grass and it'll go to the silo. I did this my first playthrough, accumulating like 600 hay.
However, keep in mind, the deluxe barns and coops don't let you "remove" hay, as its intended use it to take the hay from the dispenser and put in the trough - not a storage chest. :P
