In the winter, leaving the coop door open can lower the animals happiness rating.

You sure about that?

Yes. Plus they wont go out in winter anyways so just close it at the last day of autumn and open it again in spring.

Not only winter -- rain getting in will also make them upset, leading to reduced production.

If you coop/s is close to your barn/s, then a good habit to get into is to collect eggs and such in the morning, but milk the cows and goats/shear the sheep at night (they don't mind you doing it while they're asleep). That way, you open the animal doors in the morning on your way to collect the eggs, and close them on your way back from the milking in the evening.

Leaving the door closed 24/7 is a "safe" option in most cases, since it won't annoy any animals. However, it does mean you won't get any benefits from fresh grass (potentially not a factor if you're using *all* your land for crops or something like that); and I don't believe pigs will find truffles inside the barn.

In the wiki it said leaving the coop/barn door open overnight will have a negative effect on their heart ratings. Can't remember exactly where I read it but I'll try to find it.

It's not just in Winter, leaving it open any night will make your animals unhappy. Making them unhappy will lead to decreased yields. If you find it a pain to close it, it's actually better to just leave them inside everyday rather than letting them out and then leaving the door open although it will require more fodder. Like on days where I plan to go mining all day I'll just leave them inside because I know in my rush to get home and get to bed in time I'll probably forget to close the coop door.

Also, if it helps, I've noticed they go inside their coop/barn at 6 so anytime after that you can close it again without problems.

Leaving the door open has absolutely no effect on the happiness of my chickens. If it does, it's negated by me stroking 'em up every morning. The wiki says goats get unhappy with a door open, but I've enough to do every day on the farm without adding "open door/close door" to my list.

I used to leave my coop door open. Then Winter hit and a few days later my egg yields doubled. When Spring came I left it open again and a few days later my egg yields were cut in half. I always close the door now. It does have an effect.

i had stopped getting eggs a few days after i just left it open, when i close the door at night i magically got eggs again, all i can think is that the programming actually had them go outside before dropping eggs, so it statistically had a zero percent chance to drop eggs because no happy chickens where in the coup when it tried to calculate it. at least my guess.
