How many pigs would you recommend?

Pigs are generally the most profitable animal by a pretty wide margin (particularly if you have the Gatherer perk, which will result in ~20% more truffles), so it's not a bad idea to have a lot of them if you have the space for them and don't mind picking up truffles. If you have the Botanist perk as well (making all foraged items iridium-quality) you might even consider selling the truffles raw to save the time and effort of processing them because they're worth only slightly less than the oil at that point.

The chance of them finding more truffles after the first one of the day is increased by having a high friendship level (hearts). On average, a pig at max friendship will find 2-3 truffles per day as long as they have enough space.

No, seriously. Why do you even ask? It's just another obvious "Do it however you want!"-question.
You should have understood by now that you can play this game however you like.

This. But I'll do some breaking down so you can decide how many pigs you want. Which I'll put into the following categories: Foraging skills, Space and Manual labor.

Forging skills: Pretty basic as said before. Gatherer + Botanist will maximize your potential from the porkers for raw truffles + value. While you can in theory skip out on Botanist if you plan to process all of them anyway, without Gatherer you're missing a lot of potential.

Space: This comes down to two things, being barn and farm space. If you have spare room for more barns then feel free to add more pigs, but also keep in mind they will also need more food, obviously.

Manual labor: This comes mainly more after you have the Auto-Grabbers in your barns and/or coops. Pigs you still need to manually collect all the truffles and then process them (if you want to get oil, anyway.) which does make them a fair bit more time consuming than your other animals are because it's less 'passive' income like the others are with Auto-Grabbers. If you're fine with doing all that every day well, cool. Add more of them. If not, maybe keep their numbers lower. Because there's two other factors as well to consider. They need to be outside to do anything, and they don't come out in bad weather or period in winter.

They may be asking because of the price. A pig is sold for 16k which is quite a lot and the only "income" they generate comes from truffles. I have gone a bit crazy and bought 6-10 pigs on a couple of playthroughs. But nowadays I usually stick with 2-3. Truffles can indeed generate a good amount of money and especially when you have the Botanist profession. For me personally I feel like 2-3 piggies are enough to make some good extra cash.

if you dont mind using mods, the HUSBANDRY mod allows you to give treats to your pigs. They love MELONS, if you feed your pigs melons every four days, you will get get tonnes of truffles. With 6 or 7 pigs, I've gotten over 40 truffles a day. I also put an auto-petter both in the barn and in the yard, to keep all my animals happy. Saves you alot of time each day.

40 truffles a day is a lot! If I have done my math correctly, 40 iridium truffles would get you like 50k! o.o
