"Bad" Gifts?

I've never played a game like this before and I'm a little confused at the social/gift system. I thought Penny was cool so I gave her a couple flowers for the hell of it. Now on the npc list I see two X's by the gift icon for her. Did I forever ruin my chances with her or something?

The two X's just mean you have given her two gifts this week. You cannot give her any more until next week.

Oh no, the two X's mean you've hit your limit for the amount of gifts you can give them per week which is two. They reset every sunday so you're fine, the best way to gauge how much they like a gift is by what they say immediately after.

There are indeed "Bad" Gifts, because everyone has other likings, you can guess how much they like a Gift by the Text they say, or a Bubble over their Head either with a Swirling Black Line really disliked, or a Heart which means Loved, the X's in the Overview are just a reminder how much Gifts you gave that Person this week So-Sa, it has nothing to do with how much the liked your gift, it will always be Red X's.

You can also (occasionally) give someone a third gift in a week. It has to be their birthday, and you have to have already given them two additional gifts.
