It was originally going to be a side quest to obtain the return scepter.

This was changed.

It's just an altar to a god. People pray at it on Sundays.

Ab extra quest would have been cool, do you know why it was changed?

I cant speak for ConcernedApe personally. But if I was to guess from a purely game design standpoint:
References to religions in games can sometimes produce a lot of negative attention. Either from those who are personally religious suggesting that it's blasphemous, to others who might resent feeling like a religious subplot is being forced on them.

Again. I have no idea if that was the reason it was changed or not, that's just my personal theory.

That would've made more sense than buying it from a shadow person living in the sewer.

Not what I had been expecting, but thank you, it does make sense.

Yes, I do know that they will get offended at everything, but does that mean game devs should bend over for them?
No not really

Some developers just want to play safe and don't introduce controversial elements.

Late as hell but if you've never done a deep dive into the religious/witchy side of tumblr, I highly recommend it. It's equal parts hilarious and horrifying, with some people on the edges just quietly doing their thing. However, many tumblrites specifically worship fictional gods. The search term you want is "pop culture paganism".
