My character never interacts with them at all. They try to steal my crops on their own. And that's what they're doing. If they were "working" they'd bring the crops over to the shipping bin. Instead they take it all back to their hut and then stand around looking cute and innocent. When I first got a hut I didn't know the hut was a container and didn't know where my crops went. Later I accidently found the previous year's crops in their hut.
Oh my gosh that's hilarious. I kind of want to play a file where I have to race out the door and fight the Junimos for my harvest now.
Really though the Junimos only showed up after I completed the community centre, so I guess that they're wanting to help me because they like me, and that they wouldn't stick around if they didn't want to. Also, with them being nature spirits I'm not exactly sure how they live their lives or what they'd want from me in return for their labour. I'd be willing to give them part of my harvest if it would make them happy.
Personally I try to give them as nice a farm to work on as possible; surround their huts with Maple trees to give them shelter; and gave them wooden floor porches out the front of their huts if they want to chill there.
