For the future you should wait until the TV says it will rain the next day to upgrade the watering can. In the meantime exiting the game before you sleep will put you back to the beginning of that day so you wouldn't have upgraded your can yet.

ok, already done

Crops just don't grow while unwatered, they don't die from that.

Generally, you should upgrade your watering can during winter when you dont need to water crops.
Otherwise, you can upgrade it when you have crafted enough sprinklers to water your crops for you.

"a few days"

So you give him the tool and it will be done on the day after tomorrow (aka 1 day your crops wont get watered). This is why its a good idea, as suggested, to upgrade the can when it rains on the next day, so you wont lose any watering.

When winter comes, that is when its time to focus on the mine and skull cave after beating the mine. Its highly suggested you rush to get the bus repaired ASAP so you can get to skull cave right after getting to the last floor of the mine (and getting the skull key needed to open the cave and play the OTHER arcade game in the bar).

Watering Can is the weakest tool to level up, FWIW. It just seems REALLY important after Spring, however once you unlock the level 2 Sprinklers, you won't use the can very much.

Axe > Pickaxe > Hoe > Watering Can in terms of upgrading. I'll usually get Steel Axe prior to even levelling Pickaxe once. Cutting those trees yields Foragaging, and any energy you can save doing so is extremely helpful. Plus you gain access to The Secret Woods.

Yeah, but leveling the Pickaxe means you can head deeper into the mine, faster. The deeper you go, the harder the rocks are (the more hits they take to break). A better Pickaxe mitigates that.

Better Pickaxe > deeper in the mine > faster access to Iron and Gold > faster access to T2 sprinklers > more time to do other things besides tend crops.

This is all very interesting information, but, is it relevant to someone just starting out. Having enough gold bars to make descent sprinklers is not happenning any time soon for players with a medium, or larger, agriculture area.

First watering can upgrade is a great energy/time saver if done at the end of spring (day 27 at latest you can time your crops so that there are none to water on day 28). However, this obviously presupposes that the player is well invested in crops.

Personally, I find hoping around first level sprinklers for hoeing, planting and harvesting is a pain and hugely expensive on resourses for the limited benefit.

I guess it all depends on how the player chooses to approach the game: emphasis on fishing, mining or agriculture.

I usually get Steel Axe by Spring 10, and have Quality Sprinklers by Spring 20. That's solely with fishing, and watering crops at night, BTW. You get tons of ore and coal early on through fishing if you dedicate yourself to it, including Iron and Gold. In my latest playthrough, I had 18 Quality Sprinklers down by Summer 1 with 144 Starfruit Seeds.

I put up a guide on how I did it. So yes, even a new player can attain that.

But someone starting out won't be used to the fishing mechanics. It's not simple for a lot of people until they get used to it.
