Why have goats over cows?
Goats can only be milked every other day yes? If so wouldnt you be making more G with an extra cow instead as they can be milked daily. I dont think goat cheese is even used for cooking. I cant imagine it being substantially better than 2 cow milks either?

Less work to milk every 2 days vs every day. Let's say you have 12 cows vs 12 goats. That's 2 hours of work vs 1 hour of work. For some people, it's worth it.

Basic cow's milk - g125 - Basic cow's milk cheese - g200

Basic goat's milk - g 270 - Basic goat's milk cheese - g375

You do the maths: less work, more money.

The differences increase with quality and bonuses. See the Wiki for complete tables.

I think they meant that it'd be more like:
cheese is 200g per day
goat cheese is 375 every 2 days
cow = 200g+200g=400g in 2 days
goat = 375g in 2 days

So cows are technically better money, yeah, but goats are less work. It's really up to you, but I prefer the higher tier animals that I can forget about every other day.

Don't forget the setup costs as each goat costs more (compared to cows) and needing the bigger barn. Only real use for goats is the community bundle as they are a filler between getting sheep or pigs that make a lot more. Cows are cheap enough to pay off their cost in a season even factoring the barn but goats take much longer. All animals need to be visted on an almost daily basis to build their heart rating however if making artisan goods this is only to collect barn animal produce.

In short cows are profitable early on, goats are a cash sink, sheep can be profitable (eventually) and pigs need a good foraging skill. The only other reason to keep goat is for cooking ingredients which cows are still more useful for.

Yeah guys thats absolute a.ss. Goat milk isnt even used in any recipes or quests. Same probably applies to cheese. Seems like a lot of wasted potential, specially given what Chronie said. I wish the modding community was bigger, to give this animal some utility. Maybe it'd be good to give it a greater chance of birthing at least, making it a strictly sellable animal. Or mostly anyway.

Goats look like they have fur coats - maybe they should be able to produce wool, but at a much lower rate than sheep (maybe 1 wool a week?) and/or only after reaching maximum hearts. That way, goats could end up becoming a cow/sheep hybrid as far as animal goods production is concerned - a jack of two trades, but a master of neither.

I've never tried aging cheese but putting cheese in a cask is supposed to make it worth more. Actually I take that back. I bought a goat milk from a traveling cart, made it into cheese, and put it in a cask to see if I can make a profit. The profit will probably be small though.

How exactly does one go about making mods for this game. Maybe I could do something if I knew how.

Edit : There seems to be a guide on the wiki. I'll check this out.

Actually there's a type of goat that's sheered for its hair. The hair is called mohair. Anyway it turns out I'm allergic to computer programming so I'll leave modding to people better at programming than me.

Actually not to stir the pot here but if you are going full on Animal Herder sheep are the most Profitible. (Not including pigs cause their anoying.) with the Sheperd talent select and the right care and friendship levels sheep will produce every single day. Process to max value in 4 ingame hour will bring 470 a pop. For max profits you can anlso get rabbits and make sure to gift those feet. Only person who hate feet is Penny and everyone else loves them. :) Ageing is for suckers...rofl.

Just as a Note for non Believes. 1 barn of cows will produce 1344 milk/cheese each year. Barns full of Goats will produce 672 milk/cheese each year. How ever your basement can't age but 1k cheeses each year. So no matter which you have chosen ageing cheese for profits will only make you 400,000 for cows and 504,000 for goats. (NOTE: cap will make you 750k for the 1k yearly but will require 2 barns and will give extra unaged cheese each year.) Sheep can bring 631,680 worth in cloth per barn per year.

Now if you see fit to push the confides of the farm you could make the Cask Basement into a Loom basement, hehehe.. This will allow you to produce 56,000 cloth a year for 26,320,000 gold but that is allot of sheep and this assumes your in the bed every night by 6pm and put more wool in every night before bed. :)

why are pigs annoying

They only find truffles while outside and they're useless in winter.

Also note: Coops are cheaper to have built, will still allow 12 animals at max size, and take up less footprint on the farm. You may not get the same amount of wool but will get some feet which are way more useful then cloth.

Rabbits are not worth a huge amount as they are the slowest producing animal in the game so they never pay enough to justify the costs (over half a year to repay costs). They do potentially provide the best gifts (star quality rabbit's feet) but it isn't hard to max out villager heart ratings (stopping daily decay). Ironically they are the only animal that never breeds.

Cash animals are (in order of profits)
Chickens, Cows, Ducks, Sheep and Pigs
Can pay back all costs associated within a season or so

Filler animals are
Rabbits and Goats
Mainly used for community bundles

Ducks can be incubated and sold making them a viable but not great for cash purposes despite only producing 1 time every 2 days. Largest coops are mainly there to free up the player so they do not need to feed the animals personally every day (winter/rain) and they don't really make sense cost wise in any other way.

Barns are not much better small is cheap paying off fast and middle sized is almost useless this time (roughly 0.25% pregnancy chance a night). The Largest barns have an auto feeder but still need to visit animals almost every day for produce however more profitable animals are available.

That assumes you have 500 sheep... that you have a 4.5 heart rating with... that you have time to sheer every day... that you also process into wool each day... that don't drive you maad...

Yikes thats some bad insomnia

Ok I'm going to need the reasoning on the rabbits. I know there is a chance for daily drops but you can always just have allittle more rabbits as needed. I am with you on the barn though silos are basically worthless. It is much easier to just store hay in a chest and manually fill the Silo as needed or just feed manually unless you just have allot of barns/coops

Also Another note for going Rabbits for cloth is you can go with the Artisan talent and then all Cloth will be worth 658 instead of 470.
