Do you find animals to be worth the effort?
If yes, how many should you start off with?

Not really worth it, in my opinion. I just get one of each animal for bundles/quests/gifts.

I started with 4 chickens and 4 cows. From there, after upgrading, I added a few of all the animals to get items for bundles or for collecting. But once those items are done, they don't have too much use if you don't want to give gifts or cook. You could just have 1 of each just to keep having some animal products but not necessarily need too much maintenance for hay, including 1 dino and 1 void chicken.

I don't get animals anymore. I find them to be a huge pain for a tiny reward.

I dropped animals after 2 play throughs but then I added the animal petting mod (whatever it's called) which pets and gathers for me. Now it's like free money, not that I need it, but I feel more like a farmer and less like an JoJa industrialist.

Did I say that out aloud? :steamhappy:

Really depends on what you're comparing it to.

I mean, with chickens, if you have the auto-feeder, you only need to check them every 2-3 days, and that's only because the eggs accumulate.

Cows and goats, however, must be milked daily, or every 2 days. But they give more money per.

Pigs are passive, so you can leave your barn doors open 24/7, but they're useless during rain or snow.

Sheep aren't too bad... if you have the Shephard perk. And they aren't still bugged.

An all animal run is definitely viable. A full coop is like 3k per day, give or take. A barn is 4k or so. Pigs and sheep can change the numbers drastically.

For money? Not really.

For gifts and recipe ingredients for spouses? It depends on the spouse.

Get them when you're starting out, but once you've gotten most of their stuff, don't bother

Truffles? With truffle oil and artisan at $1500 a pop and 2 cycles per day? A lot of money right there and can be started mid game easily enough.

For the late game I do use the collector mod though otherwise I probably wouldn't bother. They don't need to be petted much (oil doesn't grade) but truffles need to be collected - can get tedious.

If you get the Happy Animals mod, it's worth it. Animals are bugged at the moment. I've done multiple playthroughs. Without the mod, some of my files end up with around 300k at the end of year 2. With the mod, I've gotten at least 1mil at the end of year 2. So if you want to have animals, get that mod. It helps immensely.

this game needs some better balance.

and not just crops to animals, but animals to animals. Why even have sheep? Rabbits make as much "wool" as I ever need and I dont need to carry another tool. Also, if i forget to sheer a sheep, i lose the wool. once a rabbit drops some, it sits for days.

Sheep are worthless.

and when it comes down to money, crops are the best, yes. But Crystalariums are the easiest. i get $150k every few days from my three sheds filed with diamonds!

I just meant in general. If you take the time to age all your cheeses then those can be worth the effort too. Truffle oil is pretty profitable but I find I need the tracker profession to find most of the truffles since they can easily got lost in the grass.

Pigs are the best, I don't even pet them and I make around 150000 - 200000 per day with 156 pigs ( 13 barn ) I don't really farm crops anymore

Ps truffle are counting as forage so take the right skills and it will worth more than truffle oil ( so you don't need 200 oil maker)

Truffles are not worth more than oil with any skill because their isn't a skill price for truffles. Even with every truffle as iridium (how? you don't pet them) it doesn't beat oil for an artisan.

The only benefit to not turning truffles into oil is you don't have to work at it.

I just don't need to pet them they produce truffle with 0 heart, plus truffle are like forage item so yeah I double the produce sometime and they are all iridium

I don't have artisan, so the oil never worth the 1250 per iridium truffle and I don't really want to work more for 200$ ( if I had artisan skill)
