Its something they wanted to do but never had funds or talent to do.
After they got bought by saber they said they finally are able to make it happen
Becuase Multiplayer makes games to be played for more than 40 hours.
I rarely buy single player games because they are too short.
Just like all games when a developers changes it, it kills the series and they lose all their money. Fallout and elder scrolls did this. And now elder scrolls is back to single player. But as for this 4A Games has announced that its next game in the Metro series will offer both single player and multiplayer options. So it shouldn't be a issue. If they made the game completely online only then it would be a issue as gamers don't like change also there would be modders, hackers that ruins the game and people who take the game too seriously and or team kill or vote to kick you out or people who skip the cutscenes or people who will just troll.
4A Games, which recently partnered with Saber Interactive, is committed to ensuring a great story-driven single-player experience as well as a multiplayer experience set in the Metro universe. The company, however, has clarified that “We’re not looking at multiplayer as a box-ticking exercise, or to jump on some trend or bandwagon. As creators, we want to explore a multiplayer experience that makes complete sense in the Metro universe.”
Also if your concerned about the next metro game that is in development just go to this link here and developers will ease your concerns. If your concerned about the Metro universe click link and read. Hope this helps everyone.

I'd totally agree with that. I'm not the best game player and I won't buy multiplayer games for that reason. I'd embarrass myself and my team mates would hate me! Optional is fine, though.
I used to like single player challenge leaderboards until I realised how many people cheated on them. I still give them a go to challenge myself: I just pay no attention to my position on the boards.
I could see Metro working fine with something like that, similar to Tomb Raider challenges:
Get back to the Metro in the fastest time while collecting all loot on the way... could be fun. Or: kill all 20 spiders in a bunker as quickly as possible whilst armed with only 5 explosive Tikhar rounds and a torch.
