Not whenever you want. You gotta rely on the autosave.
1. Yes, but the time is inaccurate. ~1min (i think because of the loading screens/cutscenes)
2. Yes, but u don't need all cogs, opals and eggs.. to finish the game. (for regular)
Oh, thank goodness! I was worried that it would be like Doom Eternal’s Ultra-Nightmare difficulty, where one death deletes your save file. It seems my fears are unfounded.
IIRC, it *does* delete your save file. It's really easy to cheat the system though; you just gotta be prepared to lose an entire level's worth of progress if you die, provided that you're save scumming.
