Beyond that, 2 and 3 decided to go the "mission based" progression route. 2, too me was the best in the series with what additions it brought to the table and how it slowly shifted away from the "pure collectathon" genre. The boomerangs were all cool and had upgrades that made them feel even better to use. Driving that fourbie is actually pretty fun and controls great for what it is. The mini games do not overstay their welcome and are actually pretty fun at times. And it has what I think is the best hub and level diversity of the series.
Ty 1 is, however, not far behind Ty2's place. The first game really nailed the feeling of collecting things. cogs, eggs, opals.... they were all very satisfying to collect, cogs especially. Ty 2 (original release) had no real incentive to collect the different collectables aside from a few opals and bragging rights. Ty 1 made collecting rewarding and had great game design in that aspect.
And uh, I don't think 3 is all that good.
Yeah, I would like to see the removal of the boomerang chassis and stones though. It made all the boomerangs feel the same and somehow also made it so that every single one was a direct upgrade over the other. There was no point in buying any other rang if you got the ring chassis, and even then you do not need that many slots. Really, in a potential 4th game, boomerangs should be much like 1, where they are story locked. Bonus boomerangs that add flair and fun to the gameplay should be unlocked from collectables.
