Gothic 4 was weak.
Risen 1 was cool.
Next Risen was good.
But third Risen was weak, and even some really good new gameplay ideas didn't helped it. Clown clothing on Patty, many quests like "collect/kill X of Y" - this is awful and boring.
There is no infinite series in gamedev.
And I'm happy that devs want to bring new setting and gameplay, they are learning of their mistakes (or "mistakes", depends of players opinion).
You've missed Gothic 1 ,as good as G2 ,or maybe better.
I still can’t understand what went wrong. The original Risen was a solid game. It received overall good reviews from game magazines and even better ones from its fans. It only needed some polishing here and there to be excellent. This game could have been a good foundation for further titles. But instead PB decided to trash everything they already achieved with Risen and make Risen 2 completely new. And by new I mean worse in every single aspect, from fundamental game mechanics to the general setting and the whole story. (i.m.o.)
I don’t know. Maybe it has to do with a lot of core PB members leaving the team after Risen 1. All I know is, that someone at PB made a lot of bad decisions after they finished the original Risen.
I still don’t know if ELEX was a good decision at all. We will see.
Gothic 1 = amazing (finished more than 3 times)
Gothic 2 + Raven's Night = even more amazing (finished more than 3 times)
Gothic 3 = tragedy (could take about 3h of that crap)
Risen 1 = Amazing, gothic like 100% (in a different setting) (finished 3 times)
Risen 2 = no dramas, but visibly worse than Risen 1 (finished once)
Risen 3 = started playing, did a few hours and still looking for motivation to finish the game...I want to play mage so it takes a bit of time to get to spells etc., but once I get to magic I will probably finish the game :)
Elex looks dangerously similar to Gothic 3 on screenshots, I have a feeling it's not going to be anyhere near as good as Gothics or Risen 1.
First of all, you have to use huge patches to make the game remotely playable...the fact that fans had to do it yet PB somehow did not manage it is just ridiculous and disrespectful to all who bought the game.
Second of all, freedom it gives is unchallanged? Where have you been for the past 10 years?
G3 is bad, it is nowhere near the quality of G1 or G2/R1. I can understand that perhaps you as a hardcore fan are enjoying it, good for you, but I will not accept a G3 as a playable game, I wish it was.
Agreed, Risen 1 is just a Gothic 1 copy,
1) Instead being inprisoned in a giant forcefield, you are inprisoned in a cursed island.
2) Old camp is a Harbour town, new camp is a Bandit camp, Sect camp is a Monastery.
3) Eldric is the new goofy Xardas,Mendoza is Cor kalom with a cool golden Ocular
4) In the end instead of fighting sleeper you fight the titan
honestly why playing the same game twice, Risen 2 and Risen 3 are more original and unique games, the experience is more fresh and unexpected.
Love Gothic 1-2 and did replay them because i had a few games only, then started playing Risen 1 i felt like i have already played this game but still finished it out of nostalgia.
Prefer for Piranha Bytes to try something new but still keep good gameplay elements.
Agreed that Risen 1 has good mechanics but the recycled plot just ruined it for me.
Go ahead and give me just one example of a game in which
1) the main character is imprisoned in a large area because of story (cursed island / giant forcefield).
2) It has exactly three factions, one in a swamp (Don faction / Sect Camp), other is a town (Old Camp/Harbour Town), last ιs in a mountain area (New Camp / Monastery).
3) a powerful Bald man (Mendoza / Cor kalom) wants to unleash a godlike monster.
Both Risen 1 and Gothic 1 share the three comparisons and i can name even more comparisons if you wish.
