This and level up. And avoid enemies that are a lot stronger than you.
Going the ranged route, the first melee weapon that really made me an effective melee fighter is the unique sword that a certain trader in Goliet has in her shop(you'll need to steal it). Requires: 30 str, 60 dex.
But basically once your weapon has at least 40-50 damage, you'll see a marked improvement in lethality, and it just goes up from there. I'm carrying an arsenal of different ranged weapons, plasma rifles are particularly effective and useful, but the ammo costs 4 elex each, which is 4x what an arrow or energy cell for the laser rifle costs.
PS: The drone robots are quite useful if you find them and make them work again. There are several places to get one.

That not the issue on combo or attack, the stats and damage is way too low to be true on difficulty or ultra mode.
Basically when you haven reach your 3rd or 4th swing combo you already lay down dead on the floor or you can be dodging monkey without doing anything, which is not right on not showing our total HP/DPS/Defend on character screen.
Tbh the number of hits it takes to kill some things is just excessive. Yeah, it gets better, but whacking a dude 7500 times with an axe shouldn't be required to kill him. Something like a troll or beast or mech, sure, whack away! Humanoid targets should take more damage though.
With enough spare money, you can buy elex potions (buy the ingredients if you didn't collect enough and mix them with the bought ingredients), if you need a few more strength to carry that weapon then. Just dont overexceed, it hurts your money pocket too much. YOu still need money left for ammo, or learning other skills, and the very costly armor later!
Tho one flaw on these unkillable beasts is that NPCs are dying left and right from me unintentionally conga-lining those beasts across half of the map trying to avoid fights
So, yeah, I guess its intentional that some critters are untouchable for half of the game. Could be defined it bit better in-game, rather than frustrate players to seek spoilers on webs.
