It's a little bit tricky. Each pin has an own "downtime" until it's resetted. You have to find the longest one, then the second one etc.. When you hit a pin and it turns blue, it's a correct one. If you hit a false one, all pins reset.

I don't get it , can you explain with a video ?

You have to make them all blue in sequence.

So

4 - 1- 2 - 3 - 5 - 6

You have to make the sequence unbroken - i.e. not hit a number out of sequence.

Or

6 3 1 2 4 5

So in that case, you'd

Do: 1,2 right >

3 < left

4 > right

5 > right

6 < all the way left

It's a very simple game once you understand it.

Does time actually factor into this? I got the impression that its all about the order in which you push the pins up.

It's just the order, time doesn't matter. You can pick the first 5 pins correctly, then go to sleep and let your game running and then pick the last pin in the morning, no problem :)

Whenever I did it, they ticked down. Thought, they would reset, if they hit the bottom.

Might vary on difficulty level: mini-games have their own difficulty slider.

no. time doesnt. its all about the order

Or maybe there is a time limit, at least I didn't notice any. It doesn't really matter because before time would play a role, you either made a mistake and reset the pins or you found out the correct order and can do all of them in one go. So even if there is a time limit, it's completely irrelevant in picking the lock.

I learned from a REALLY helpful video that explains it, can unlock every chest now with ease :)

Here is how you pick a lock.

You must start with a central pin that stays blue when you are not under it. Once you find that pick a direction of either right or left.

Lets say right...
So you move right one pin at a time until either:
- you reach the rightmost pin and your run of pins is still blue
- or you move under a pin and they all drop to red. This means you went 1 pin too far to the right.

Exactly repeat the pattern that go you to the above spot but when going right, stop just before the pin that caused them to drop.

Now go left extending your blue streak by 1 pin. This is a guaranteed safe move.

Next the correct move is either 1 pin left of your run or 1 pin right of your run of blue.

Pick one or the other and keep extending your run of blue either 1 left or 1 right.

Whenever you fail, repeat exactly what you did to get were you were when it all dropped and go 1 pin the other way instead.

Easy peasy.

It's much easier than this. Just go in the lockpicking screen and press 'backspace'. Tadaa! Your chest is open. ;) Will get fixed hopefully, for now it's working.

it's almost like irl. except here you can only affect pins next to contiguous set of pins you already set. plus there're hardly any 12-pin locks irl :P

so you find blue pin. then try one of it's neighbors. if it turns blue then continue with either left or right neighbors of two blue pin. and so on. if you fail all turn red and you restart. combination stays same so initial few steps you replay from memory.

People need explanation for opening chests?

It's not intuitive and different from any other game I've played. But easy once you know it's only about the order of the tumblers.
