Well, I think a major part of the fun of Elex is figuring things out for yourself and making the experience very unique to you and not follwing too many guides.

But some of the mechanics of the combat system are explained pretty poorly by the in-game tutorial so I would recommend at least learning all you can about combat before getting into the game.

Here are my tips:

Stick at it, it does get easier. Do not engage in combat with any enemies that have a skull icon next to their health and do not engage in more than one enemy at a time when you're on your own.

Don't worry about the excess skill points at the start, as you get enough to unlock the various attribute requirements, you'll soon find yourself not having enough for what you want.

Getting a ranged weapon helps a lot too, you can get off 2 or 3 shots then switch to melee when the enemy is close (just don't leave it too late or you'll get hit before you switch weapons).

Quests are the best way to level up in the beginning, but if you go to where they are and the enemies are too hard just run or avoid them. The creatures don't chase you forever and if you use your jetpack to jump up cliffs you can escape them easily.

With the axe that I started with I could get off three light attacks and then the special attack, then I would have to back off (birds you just use the A or D keys to circle them and they rarely hit you) for my stamina to regenerate.

I don't know what faction you're going for but I went Beserkers and their magic is VERY powerful. By using the starting spell and a companion I can take down a skull creature and that is extremely satisfying after having them wipe the floor with me so many times :D (keep in mind this is at around 30 hours into the game and at level 12 or so, so I don't know how beginner that tip is).

And that's another thing: after every fight or whenever you're about to approach a new area, hell even just every few minutes when you think of it, Quicksave. It makes it not so frustrating when you accidentally start fighting something too strong.

Potions are somewhat rare in the beginning so only use them in combat (and only when you're sure doing so will ensure you win). Otherwise use beds and food to regenerate health.

The most important thing to remember is you're NOT at the top of the food chain. In fact, near the start, you're pretty much at the bottom and nearly everything can kill you. Watch your surroundings carefully for enemies and avoid them if you're not confident. If you're getting low on health, sheath your weapon, run like hell, and chug a potion or some food. Live to fight another day :D
Put points in strength, vitality and dexterity. Mostly in str and vit. Dex is secondary couse there are weapons does not require it like axes and maces. Get yourself a mace and a shield or twohanded sword or hammer. Thou twohanded weapons do require dex and str the ammount of dex is lesser so it is mostly str weapon. It is theoreticly possible to play as mage or shooter but too much pain in the ass in practice. Besides bows and guns need ammo and gloves (magic) need mana or energy. You will fight mostly monsters or animals so they will try to get close to you as fast as they can. Half of monsters and animals can and will shoot you (don't ask me how) if you try to shoot them from above. Even if you will fight against enemies that can't shoot you when you fly, they will move, so you will miss some shots ... a lot of them. So ... range or magic is a bad choise at start. Which means you should get 50 - 55 str and 35 dex and 40 - 50 vit first, to get close combat +2 bonus health and endurance, as fast as possible to be able to kick some ass. Everything else is secondary. Then you can get some int and charisma or cunning or whatever the last atribute is, and get perks for more exp from monsters and quests. Oh and one more thing. There is no achievement for difficulty of the game and the ballance is ♥♥♥♥♥, so play on easy without auto aim. Auto ain will get you killed so turn it of.
Oh one more thing! Collect elex and turn it into +2 atrubute or +1 skill point potions. There are traiders with 20 or 18 elex which can be turned into +10 atribute points or 2 -3 skill points.
Good luck.
Oh and sorry for grammatical errors.

yes, do not neglect melee, even if you want to go full guns/laser/bows later

Grab the stealing perk and farm your way through villages. Some NPC's have high lvl weapons on them you can either sell or keep for yourself. I got a atomar reaper from the Doc's bodyguard in the outlaw fort for example. took a while to fulfill the attribute requirements but it kicks ass.
In the beginning your are pretty weak, or what am I saying... I was a lowbob until chapter 3 and I still have to avoid some enemies...
I recommend you to focus on 1 type of combat for now. When you go jack of all trades you aren't that bad at anything but neither good at something. Melee is good through the whole game and most enemies just mindlessly charge you in the face anyway..
Also, the outlaw traders sell handgrenades - they are good at killing everything even overlevelled mutants and albs. The alb machines usually take 4-5 grenades and they're down.
Look out for an amulett that gives you more xp for completing a mission.
Try to get the attribute skill (gives 1 more attribute point after lvl up) as soon as you got a good base of attributes. Your goal for the beginning should be to get everything except dex on at least 30.
For the companions (this is really subjective) Ray is useless, if your roleplay allows go with Duras or Crony (your drone). Later you will get really good companions.
You can do a lot of quest by just running, jumping and dodging through enemy groups in case your quest is not to kill those ofc.

Also, watch out for your coldness!!!!! There are some dialogue options you can or cannot choose if your cold is too high or too low!! Being angry, showing empathy and refusing to accept a reward lowers your cold. Mindless killing, insisting on higher rewards etc increases your cold. Choose wether you want to be logical, emotionless and effective or a philantrop...
You also have the ability to start a romance. I myself couldn't start any yet, but it seems logical that you can't be synthetic af and susceptible to love with a human. (I may edit this reply if I find something out in terms of coldness and realtionships.)

EDIT: you can have a relationship with high cold

You don't have to (and maybe shouldn't) fight to progress, especially in early stage. Avoid / Run away from mutants and explore the world, find and do easy quests and scavenging. You can earn more than decent XP and Elexit in this way. And get the companipns, that's the default setting.

As Jax was saying, he needs decent equipment before seriously thinkng about fighting. Albs without Elex are supposed to be nobody, and mutants are REAL threat. So it's kinda makes sense that you die to them. It's normal to be loser, this game is like that so don't be discouraged!

And there's no shame in reducing the difficulty too.

Get a companion as fast as you can. At the beginning a companion kills nearly everything for you. I think doing duras questline as fast as you can makes the things much easier even when i dont like it that my fellow is 10 times stronger then myself:)

"I don't know what faction you're going for but I went Beserkers and their magic is VERY powerful. "

Said nobody ever. I'm almost 20th level now. Either go to Domed City and use teleporter there or run your little butt up the road far to the NE to Ignadon. Join Clerics. Receive flamethrower and laser rifle.

Come make post about how easy the combat is and how OP energy weapons are. Profit!

The.End.

For the guy that wrote the quote above watching 'zerks throw their little fireballs around is cute while they "wait" for mana to reload. I have a "wand of fireballs" called a TypeA2 flamethrower that rapidly puts 25 shots down range that do the EXACT same thing at 10X the speed. You were saying?

That is part of the problem on this board. Lots of subjective advice, lots of advice from people who haven't been out of berserker turf, etc. Things look powerful when the most advanced tech you've seen is a fancy longbow or a guy slowly throwing his fireballs around.

Once you see plasma rockets and energy grenades? Yeah... not so much with the archaic shy te weapons from the middle ages.

Scrounge, scrounge, scrounge. I've found loads of useful equipment just by jetpacking everywhere and trying to explore my immediate location.

As for fights, they can often be cheesed even against higher level opponents. It depends on the enemy, but a lot of the time it's letting your companion tank while getting in cheap shots from behind when the enemy is locked on your comrade. And then if your tank goes down, just boogie about 100 meters away, he'll wake up and rejoin you, then you can go fight the thing that knocked him out again in the same way. And you can save at any point if you've whittled the opponent down and are at a safe moment. It took me 20 minutes, but I fought some chthulu looking thing like that and got a load of xp for it.

Against multiple opponents, you can usually run around in circles, get distance from whatever's chasing you, then get in a hit or two against whatever your companion is fighting. Eventually it will go down and your buddy will move on to the next target. Typical PB game cheese tactic, but it works. Otherwise, same as above kind of thing.

Some things, like raptors, can't range attack, so early in the game when you have a bow you can just arrow them to death from rooftops or jetpack between standing structures if they get too close or walk out of your LOS.

And get used to simply running away. Sometimes it's just not worth it to sit there for 25 minutes trying to whittle down some block of granite with your rusty axe, even if you can win the fight. Most of these things can one-shot you if you're unlucky anyway.
