If it's a duel, they won't interfere. That's normal.
(btw a gamebreaking bug is a bug which doesn't let you progress in the game - mostly related to the mainstory. If your companion doesn't help, you still have the option to beat the enemy without you companion and therfor it's per definition no gamebreakingbug but just a normal bug)
At level 4, probably Drog, the guard at Goliet. Or Bertram?
And yes, in duels, companions don't do the dirty work for you.
Realistically in the world, why wouldn't my companion help me? It's not like all 3 parties agreed to a 1 on 1 duel, he said he was going to kill me through the dialog, and my companion just decided not to help, not because of any in-game or lore reason, but because PB in all of their incompetence decided not to fix this bug.
They do that all the time. Under normal circumstances, most companions are the first to attack nearby foes even if you let Jax run past those. I write "most", because one specific companion is scripted to be more defensive.
Assuming you refer to Bigby, the "Bad Debts" outlaw hanging around in Edan below The Pit - if during conversation you ignore the option to resolve that mission peacefully with Ornir and explicitly choose to attack Bigby, it will be a scripted duel for this NPC for gameplay reasons. The game doesn't want you (player) to exploit companion fighting power so easily. It's also an honor thing. Yet you can choose to flee, and if you return, Bigby will be handled like any ordinary hostile NPCs, and your companion will join the fight.
It has been pointed out to you before that duels in ELEX are a feature, not a bug.
That is how duels with a single named human NPC work in ELEX - different than in the Gothic series (with its beat up NPC and rob them gameplay style or the explicit finishing move that was necessary to kill neutral/friendly humans/orcs), but it's a thing between you (Jax) and your opponent. If the companions (or nearby NPCs) did the dirty work, it would not be a duel anymore.
If you can't do it alone, flee like a coward and return later as a last resort. It will be an ordinary hostile NPC then.
what he's missing's theatrics. yeah pb suck at that. they should've coded dialog where bigby tells your companion to stand down because he's dueling you. doesnt make much difference to me but others care it seems.
