They've hidden them so well you can't even find enough of them to make something useful to play the game
They are a gift to completionist explorers and meta-gamers most of all. Once you've found them before, you can use that information for future playthroughs - in the same way you would run through to the location of a good starting weapon. Else consider them a nice surprise when exploring carefully.
Ugh, one little error in my sentence and people freak.
I meant, that I finished the game and never found enough to make anything useful out of them, because the ones that are useful give a +10, but you need to convert them into the Large gem.
Being a completionist and finding them all at the end of the game is pointless
