You likely won't find anything better than you have that you can actually use. (strength and dexterity restrictions). The game is really hard early on.

Try and avoid combat and focus on missions that don't require combat to complete.

In this game, running is often the better part of valor. :)

A better weapon at that level will have str and or dex requirements that you don't meet. But one of the easiest to grab is on the island in the middle of a lake just to the east of Goliet on your map. If you take the quest to find the 8 healing plants that quest sends you to that spot.

In the middle of the island is a well, and a nice sword is in the well. It does Energy damage with a Damage over time effect. Requires 43 str and 43 dex.

Just doing the quests in Goliet can get you up to level 9 or so without having to fight much of anything.

You can get a free armor upgrade from the spot where the 2 Hunters are hanging out. Inside their cabin is a Hunter armor you can grab.

FYI... with the 1st armor upgrade you will still get killed in 2 hits by most stuff. You really have to get to the point in combat where stuff does not hit you, at all.

You only get to the point where you can take 3 or 4 hits from the weaker enemies at around level 15.

At level 29 the tougher enemies still kill you in 1 or 2 hits.

It's all about not getting hit.

Two shots don't really disappear until ~level 16. You gain 5 HP per level and either 10 or 15 (hard to be certain when numerical values are hidden) from the survival skill. Consititution raises HP by 1 per point.

As for a better weapon, if you go 17 strength and 17 dexterity early you can find a broadsword in one of the buildings near goliet, or buy one from the weapon vendor or armor smith (don't remember which.) It does much higher damage than the rusty axe and lasts a few levels before it is outclassed again.

Armor is not really a big deal early on, truth be told. Tier 1 and 2 armor (worker/hunter armor, thief/scrap collector armor, other low rank faction gear like them) are more balanced for hunting creatures like spire hounds and raptors. They don't help much against humanoids.

choosing a faction gives you access to the "armor smith" and "weapons merchant" basicaly the available armor and weapons are directly related to your status in each faction (playing on the PS4) I joined the Bezerkers first and gained the rank of knight, working to paladin. as soon as I hit 15 I got my 2nd magic "weapon" and a flood of better weapons that you can add gems to.

Dont forget to check workbenches to see if you can upgrade weapons you'll be amazed that your starter axe can go from 13 to 40 with elemental bonuses, of course it's quikly passed by weapons that get 100+ damage.

all in all just use what you have, think about your combat choices... "Ranged" is your prefered attack early on as you survive most if not all combat (remember to buy all the ammo you find) as you burn through it quickly.

Problem is, at level 5, you can find some better weapons, you just won't have enough strength, dexterity, etc, to equip them. I have plenty of good weapons at level 12 that I can't equip yet. Sill using an axe and bow I found early in the game.

I will give some actual advice, but first I want to say this; don't let the difficulty of the early game discourage you. This is how PirahnaBytes designs their games. The early game is supposed to be brutal. It serves a dual-purpose; forcing you to learn the combat system well and giving you a real sense of growth and empowerment as you get stronger and the game goes from "Oh no, I'm stuck in a room with a bunch of mutants" to "Oh no, these poor mutants are stuck in a room with me".

On to the real advice; Due South of the Hotel Ruins at Goliet, next to a river, you'll find Geron, a Berserker hunter. Inside his house is a locked chest with a suit of Hunter Armor. Chances are you'll be using this armor until you get your first set of faction armor. The only better option you'll get that I know of is Scrap Scavenger armor from Tavar that only give an extra point of armor over the Hunter suit.

As for weapon, I recommend buying an Iron Hammer from the Blacksmith in Goliet. Two-Handed weapons give you an advantage in reach and do MUCH more damage on the Q attack than One-Handed, at the cost of attack speed and being able to carry a shield. This makes it possible to take down most early game enemies 1v1 without having to chip away their HP for 10 minutes.

Combat at level 5 is not worthwhile at all. You shouldn't concern yourself with a weapon this early in the game. Even if you got a better one and could even wield it, it still won't help you any more than what you already have. You would still be doing miniscule damage and getting one-shotted by runt critters. The payoff is not worth the effort this early. You mostly just get 5 xp, a claw and a tooth for a 20 minute fight.

At this stage, loot and steal like a madman and just do quests that don't involve combat. That is where all the XP is at during early levels. Avoid combat until you are able to take on a companion. I was around level 7 or 8 before I went out venturing with a companion and he did most of the fighting. Make sure to have Trophy skill by that time. I didn't feel like I was contributing much to the fights until I got level 10. The companion did all the killing and I just ran around looting and trying not to die.
I got a +1 lockpicking, +5 armor amulet before getting the jetpack and meeting Duras at the beginning of the game. 75 minutes in, I had the sunglasses that show items and they have +10 armor. They are on top of a windmill northeast of the domed city. I know I got pants from somewhere - was it from going to the ruins with Duras? - and the others have mentioned where to get the free chest armor. Weapons are tougher to deal with because of the stat requirements.

Fine beserker mace and using the ignore armour finisher you can kill everything without levels. Also your not a fighter class until level 15, your like a scavenger noob until them, hero is level 25. 35 is GOD.

If you want to fight, go to the Teleporter directly in front of Goliet, then look for the grey block on the map to the north. It's some kind of water refinery thing, and on the lower floor you can get a free Hatchet (30 damage compared to the 22 on the Rusty Axe), which only requires 33 Strength and 23 Constitution. Can't expect to become a killing machine with that, but it's a pretty nice weapon if you want to do some fighting early on.

Early armor won't really help that much against the damage the enemies do, so learn to avoid their attacks.

Consititution DOES increase hp?

I read on reddit none of the stats increase anything, just make skills available to unlock, and gear able to be used.

And that reddit post is wrong.

The stats do what they say, but it is a minor effect which makes it hard to see when you only have a bar and not numbers to see in game.

Has been confirmed by the devs.

"Don't ask for a refund because the game is poorly designed"

This is how PirahnaBytes designs their games.
"PirahnaBytes doesn't know how to create games that are fun from start to finish"

"The game is so poorly designed that you are a worthless meatsack at the begining, so it's no fun, but don't worry, because eventually you will be so overpowered that it's no fun".

On to the real advice; Due South of the Hotel Ruins at Goliet, next to a river, you'll find Geron, a Berserker hunter. Inside his house is a locked chest with a suit of Hunter Armor. "The game is so poorly made, you have go to a specific house, and look in a specific closet to get armor. It's pretty much your only option. Also, you will be presented with enmeys that are so overtuned for your first ten minutes, that you'll spend your second ten minutes chiping away at their HP"

"But hey, overpriced poorly designed games from devs that arn't even trying may not be everyones cup of tea."

There's pants in the chest/locker in the ground area of the observatory where you start in.

CON does increase HP. I started my game by upping my CON to 30, and that drastically increase my survivability. That being said, the benefits of having higher STR/DEX attributes for direct application in combat is very marginal.
