DOS or Windows
This games was released for both MS-DOS and Windows 95. Is there any difference between these two versions? I have this game installed and there are both ORION2.exe and ORION95.exe

Consdiered it has a Windows executable perhaps it would perform better in Wine than in DOSbox.

As I recall, the window 95 version just opened a dos command window and ran the game in there. Very much like the dosbox used in this steam release.

So, even though it said it was running in windows 95 it really wasn't.

Ridiculous. The Windows 95 version is a native Windows executable. After you apply the last official patch, the Windows version runs great. I think it runs better than the DosBox version, but everybody has their own (personal) preference.

Getting it to run takes a little work, but it is native Windows code and it works like a charm.

Here's how:

To get the Windows version to run, you must copy a Direct X .dll to your Windows/System32 folder from the game folder. The game complains about the missing .dll in an error box--when you try to run the game. Simply remember the name of the file, find it in the MOO2 folder, copy the file, and paste the file in the Windows/System32 folder. That fixes the crash.

Next, you will want to go into the MOO2 game folder and find a text file named orioncd.ini. Change the drive letter to match your hard drive. It **might** say something like "D:\Orion 2". It really doesn't matter what it says! Just change the first letter (it's a big captial letter!) to a C. (Now, the only line of text in the file starts with a capital C.) This will stop the game from looking for a copy of the game CD.

Right click on the Orion95.exe file. Click Properties. Click Compatibility. Set the game to run in compaitibility mode for: Windows XP Service Pack 3. Also, make sure to check the Disable Scaling on High DPI Settings.

You're good to go!

Or you can just use the DOSbox wrapper already provided, and call it a day. No muss, no fuss, no hassle, just ... it works.

But Im not a fan of the mods for it. seems to me it makes the game easier. :/

Which version is the last official patch? Also, no DPLAY.dll file is in the game folder. and its kkind of unclear how the orioncd.ini should look

I don't know what "mods" you're thinking of.

GOG.com's version of MOO2 comes with the (fan-built) v1.4 patch. There is precisely zero difference between that, and the v1.31 official patch ... except some bugfixes and improved multiplayer-over-internet stability.

There is literally no difference in gameplay between 1.31 and 1.40 ...

Which version is the last official patch?
v1.31
