It seems like every time someone makes a game "like MoO," they always mean MoO2. I'd love to hear some game recommendations that are like this game but not its sequel. I don't mean remakes of this like 1oom or Remnant, I mean space-based 4x TBS games with hundreds or thousands of ships in a fleet and a reasonably fast-paced approach to gameplay. Is this game really so unique that the MoO2 imitators (including the remake to bear this one's name!) are the only ones out there?...

Do I have to feed points into a certain research gradually to get a bonus of some sorts ? And what do those lightbulbs signify ? Sorry if these questions are dumb, I'm new to the genre.
