The current average population numbers for the last 30 days are pretty close to the 12 month average, 388 vs 467. Some of that is just annual variability, particularly as it relates to the school year. Almost all of the top players can be found in the official Discord (Discord icon in the main menu is a clickable link) along with map and mod makers, content creators from Twitch and YT, and people who make Steam guides and tutorials. You can search any topic from the most effective woodspam designs to the best machine gun placements to which faction has the nicest looking hats and find a lively debate on the topic. There's also a channel where players share replays you can watch to compare building techniques and playing styles.

I can't speak for every random player you may meet online of course. But if you're looking to join a community it's a great place to start. YT creators Incursus and Frazzz also maintain Discord servers where you can find helpful veterans.
