Classic vs Enhanced
If I were to play System Shock, and had both Classic and Enhanced; which version should I play?

With some tweaking, you can make Enhanced act like the original (ie. setting controls.cfg to use the original key configuration without mouselook, etc.). So you actually have more choices than that...you could play Classic, Enhanced w/ mouselook, or Enhanced with original keybinds. =oP

Honestly, it's up to you. I think I'll probably go the Enhanced route on my next replay as I really don't see any reason not to and it avoids any DOSBox glitchiness, etc. Whether I use mouselook or original controls is yet to be determined.

Cool, thanks. Never played either before, so wanted to know. When I do, I'll probably also record it to upload, so I take it Enhanced will be better for that too?

Enhanced is better than everything; it knocks the original out in everything (unless you really love messing with midi music I guess).
It features better resolution, bug fixes, mouselook, and it doesn't run out of DOS which yeah, it would record better.

Yeah; I can't really think of any reason to play original at this point. Enhanced has everything the original does; it just runs better, in Windows, with more options (higher resolutions, different control profiles, etc.). I'm not very familiar with recording games, but I know many have done so using Enhanced, so you shouldn't have an issue.

I bought teh original but found the controls too much to handle. All I wanted to do was get into the game, but it was, learn this, learn that. I just gave up.

Is the enhanced version more player friendly?

So it's still a complicated interface by today's standard, but Enhanced does simplify it as much as possible. For example, they changed "E" into a toggle for mouselook so you can look around as in most modern shooters without needing to use the more antiquated keyboard or point-and-click interface to look up/down, and there's also a more standard WSAD configuration for movement. A lot of the interface (inventory, cybernetic upgrades, etc.) is still point and click, etc., but that just takes some getting used to.

To sum it up, it's still more complex than an average FPS, but much more accessible with the mouselook toggle. I think with a little time with it, you should get a handle on things. IMO, it's worth it, but as always, your mileage may vary.

I thought the copy I had used normal mouse-look anyway. It's been so long since I tried it. I'll load it up now to have a look.

EDIT: I see the game i had was System Shock 2. Sorry.

I think I have given up on it to be honest. I guess everyone knows, but there is a re-boot of System Shock coming out next year. I think it's worth waiting for.

Yeah - I'm very much looking forward to the remaster as well!

Yeah, if 2 was too much for you, I don't think you'll have much luck wiht 1. They are FANTASTIC games, but you do have to learn the interfaces to enjoy them. I still think it's well worth it, but you're the only one who can judge that for yourself.

I'm excited that the remaster will make one of my all-time favorite games fresh and more playable for a whole new audience.
