Can't Get Through the Tutorial

Okay I'm on the like fourth screen of the tutorial and I'm trying to push this cart but there's barrels in the way? I can walk around and push the cart a little but it gets stuck at varying points along these barrels. I've tried hitting and clicking things randomly but don't understand what I'm supposed to do? I'm murdered if I try to progress without the cart. What gives?

You are supposed to kill the guy who will shoot you with your pickaxe, and then run past him after picking up his gun.

I tried that a bunch of times, but never could. I ended up finaly just running all the way past him while dodging his bullets. :\
