Crashing issue?
Everytime I boot the game up, before it even loads it crashes and a windows's crash error box opens saying it crashed, and it is searching for the issue. That's it, anyone have the same issue, or a way to fix it? I just want to play some crusader :(

For those who come here in the future I fixed it as such, using Nvidia Control Panel, in theory this could be done with CCC for ati Cards too:

go to Nvidia Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings.

Now Find Stronghold or Crusader, whichever is afflicted. If the program is not there, click "Add" and navigate to its location on your PC.

Once selected, change the following settings:
Preferred Refresh Rate - Application Controlled
(If you have SLI) SLI Rendering Mode - Single GPU

This fixed it for me, let me know if you have had success.

Nothing of this works for me. I changed the compatibility mode, downloaded & applied the official HD patch... Game goes on crashing on startup with the message "Stronghold.exe stopped working".
As to the solution proposed by Tuton, as far as I'm concerned the current PC I'm on runs with an ATI graphic card and unfortunately the CCC offers no such options he describes, so I can't configure a special graphic launch mode for Stronghold.
I sent a ticket to Firefly, but they are somewhat slow to answer (WHEN they actually answer...), so I'm a bit worried and very disappointed so far by this lack of followup of their games. I bought Stronghold on Steam despite having it in a box version already because I love this game and the early series as a whole and wanted to have a Steam version with Cloud storage to be able to play it anywhere without worrying about backing up my saves over and over and it eventually turns out I can't even play the game normally unless a solution is found soon... So sad!

Hi there,

I finally found a solution. :whiterun:

For those who, like me, had the game crashing on startup with a black screen and a "Stronghold.exe stopped working" message and who have NOT solved this issue so far with all the hints provided in this topic and other similar ones (change compatibility mode etc.), here's a clue that's been sent to me by the official Firefly support and that worked for me, so it might as well work for you guys too:

- make sure you applied the official HD patch (which is NOT automatically applied by Steam, surprisingly enough); you can download it here >>> http://www.strongholdhd.com/patch.html
- go to your default "C:\User\<Your name>\Documents\Stronghold" folder
- delete the stronghold.cfg file
- launch the game

The game should launch normally now. Don't worry, your saves won't be deleted (mine weren't, so...), the only things you might have to change are the graphic settings.

Enjoy this wonderful game! And leave a comment if this hint was useful to you. Cheers!

Necro post but for anbody who may be experiencing the same issues with the game unexpectedly quitting. If you have reinstalled the game as it is a classic, but cannot getit to work on a G-Sync monitor. Turnes out it is the G-Sync. I went into the NVIDIA Control panel and configured the settings for Stronghold/Crusader. Manage 3D settings>Program Settings>Preferred Refresh rate(Application Controlled) APPLY. Then applied, then straight into the game.

If none of the above solutions work for you, try changing your screen resolution. Right click anywhere on your desktop and change it from there. Worked for me.

I was able to fix this game by installing the Bink Video codec created by RAD Game Tools, Inc.

Download and install RAD Video Tools : http://www.radgametools.com/down/Bink/RADTools.exe

Then I installed the game updates/patches and it worked fine

Thanks, this fix did the trick for me!
