When you want to play a multiplayer game using GameRanger, you run GameRanger (not Stronghold Crusader), and then open a room for Stronghold 2, or join one. If you opened a room, you should wait for other players to join, and when all are ready - start the game (from GameRanger - you have start game button, or something like that), or if you joined a room, you wait for the host to start the game, and in both ways Stronghold Crusader starts automatically.
You can also play it without GameRanger this way:

Some play their "expert games" which ruins fun, some play normal castle building games, which are slower a bit, but more like what you used to play I think, and when you siege, you must to it way more carefully. Besides that, you can find someone to play with you against AI opponents which is also really interesting. You give the AI lords advantage, and try to survive together, and to prevail. :)
You could come to Stronghold Nation sometimes - we make gaming events sometimes, and we like to play games just like that, and just for fun. :)
I meant this was my first time playing MP and I have had the game for 13 years. :)
Oh yeah, I also played a match with a guy who built 40 woodcutter huts and 20 of every other building during the grace period. Is that normal for people to be so cheap when playing?
On the other hand many of them just spam everything - they build more woodcutters than they actually need, and they build way more mills than they need (even though they might not produce bread at all), and all of this only to generate huge population, to set taxes to -24, and set food to no rations, before grace period expires. This way they get much gold, and a lot of peasants - they are able to train more than 150 men at single moment, and instantly to attack.
Still, not everyone plays like this. There are many of us who don't like this way of playing. For example, I do use "sleepers" to get more army if I need them, but my way is not to build unnecessary buildings only to gain more unproductive peasants. I would shut down my quarries or iron mines, so I would get more recruits, in exchange of some resources (this way I do lose some stone and iron). I just like to play the way I think it is fair.
Also, some players use portable shields - I don't like to use them, because I think they are overpowered - they provide more protection than stone towers does. :/
Speaking about larger number of woodcutters - I think that is something that is fair. You build a little bit larger number of them, so they would bring you more wood, and so you could build more stone quarries, iron mines, weapons producing workshop, etc... But still, I do not build to many of them - I don't use woodcutters for getting more recruits, or something like that.
I'll add you and wait for an event.
You can follow if there is some gaming event here[forums.strongholdnation.co.uk], and you can also create one there.
Also, I should say that, while creating these events, we must decide which version to play - HD or non-HD. We need to prepare ourselves to have the right version, as HD and non-HD versions are not compatible in multiplayer. I can have both versions.
