Stronghold Crusader HD

Second tutorial mission
I have a question about Population. I get that you increase it by building hovels, but how many population procudes one hovel? I don't get that my population is always dwindling, unless it means Death. Which is fitting I guess.

It seems everyone dies in 5 minutes though. I didn't expect life expectancy this bad.

I think i'm completely playing this game wrong. I'm building like dozens and dozens of houses because my entire population keeps suddenly dying. Leaving me with no way to complete the objective.

A house increases your population cap by 8. It is the fraction at the bottom of your scribes book.

Peasants/workers don't die. If you fail to keep your population happy (aka popularity), they will leave. This is the big number on the scribe's book. 50+ means peasants will come and any lower means they will leave. The higher the popularity, the quicker peasants will arrive.

Im guessing you werent building a granary, and thats why your popularity dropped so fast. As long as you have food to feed your population, your popularity should be fine (apples best food income per worker, bread chain best per farm), so get that goind and more or less forget about popularity while you learn the other parts of the game. You can come back to learn about tax, fear factor, beer coverage, religion, and other popularity mechanics when you reach the point that you want to finetune your skill.
