connection lost during multiplayer

I've been playing multiplayer no problem for months. Now all of a sudden, we cant play without it lagging, saying "connection lost" and then it kicks both of us out of the game. Both our games are updated and it's not an issue with the internet.

Are you using GameRanger, LAN, or a VPN?
Either way i'd recommend restarting your computers and routers (turn off and on). Also make sure Windows didnt randomly reset the firewall permissions and maybe try running the game as admin? Make sure you're on the fastest internet connection possible and are using ethernet cables instead of WiFi because of packet loss.

In game press Alt+T to see the pings. What the ping is is not important (I have played regularly with pings of 280+ without issues), what you want to look out for is large changes in that ping, that's called a pingspike, and is the primary cause of lag in my experience. If this is your problem, try using a VPN like windscribe, it usually increases the ping a small amount, but makes it more steady and reliable overall.
