Also - try this. https://steamcommunity.com/app/40970/discussions/0/846963165489225749/ Let me know if that helps. Reinstalling also shouldn't be a big deal if you haven't tried it already, just make sure you delete those pesky appdata folders and configuration files before installing it again.
But trying to fix something that's broken is fun! There's a certain sense of satisfaction that comes from solving the problem, and by solving it, you can state the solution here to save a few other people from a wasted evening.

Try to search folder where you installed this game and search stronghold.exe and click to run the game because icon on pulpit sometimes doesn't work. I had this problem with game warlords battlecry 3 but now it works. Just try maybe this trick help you.
