SOLUTION FOR ANYONE WITH THE "INPUT OUT OF RANGE" ISSUE

Step 1: Go to your Steamapps folder.
Step 2: Find your Stronghold folder.
Step 3: Open it and find "Stronghold.exe"
Step 4: Right-click Stronghold.exe and click "Send to..."
Step 5: Click "Send to Desktop (Create a Shortcut)".
Step 6: You should see a Stronghold.exe shortcut on your desktop now. Right click it, hit properties.
Step 7: In the line that says "Target", scrolls over the text and backspace it.
Step 8: Copypaste this into the "Target" line

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Stronghold\Stronghold.exe" -windowed

Step 9: Double-click the shortcut and start the game.
Step 10: Go to options, change the resolution to whatever you want. It'll work.

Now it should work. This works for Stronghold Crusader, too. You can also add -windowed to the Stronghold launch properties through Steam.

Nice solution! In my case I used DxWnd to do pretty much the same.

I started the game in a window and changed the resolution to 800x600, so I could start the game via Steam and change it again to 1600x900 and finally play the game.
