Killing Room

The snowman boss has too much health
As much as I like this game, I think the snowman boss needs less health. It takes forever to kill even with a shotgun.

If the update was intended to fix this or any other problem, it obviously didnt.

Still the snowman takes a ton of damage and kill the player.Lets not forget that the player has reduced health while the snowman has full health (and plenty of it to burn through).

The snowman has become so notoriously difficult that playthroughs on this game in youtube stopped on his level.

The concept is great, it really is.But it has still a lot of bugs overall and needs to be refined especially in the gameplay. If an enemy hits you and you are close to a barrel, it explodes, killing you instantly or best case scenario, lowering your health ever more.If you try to pickup ammo equipped with your pistol, you can't, you have to switch to your other gun in order to pick it up.The shotgun fires both barrels, making it a single shot weapon, which doesnt help.Ammo pickups give to the shotgun one (1) shell only.

Me too.

Even if some players can kill the boss (because say, they have better reflexes or they were ideally equipped at the time), that doesnt mean that the majority can, or that they can repeat the feat.Someone mentioned that you can kill him easilly if you have a shotgun and pulling headshots. He didnt say what happens if you dont have one, or how to make headshots without being hit by the frozen rays (and being slowed down to receive a quick melee hit afterwards.I dont even take into account the falling icicles). Also what happens if you have a bad item that negatively affects your abilities?Restart?

In my opinion the game is brutally hard in order to conceal it's small span or the general flaws in the game design.Although the sarcastic atmosphere is fitting, I also dont like the fact that it insults the player when he uses the health vending machines, or the fact that the counter in the intro screen shows double the number of times you died than what actually is.Just to rub it into your face, you suck here.

In contrast, if you have played Ziggurat, the gameplay is so nicely refined and smooth, you dont mind if or whether you get killed in the end.And that is the trick to make players to come back and try again and again in such games. No wonder it is considered one of the best roguelike shooters out there. The game lasts only 5 rooms, wihich is 3 less that of KR's 8.In this game the deaths are sometimes so cheap, you feel like you wasted time, not actually played.

Whatever you try, the game flips the middle finger at you.Basic weapon? An innacurate peashooter with 7 rounds that makes you reload like crazy, but the only thing you can rely on for the entire game. You are rewarded powerups about weapons you dont get, maybe you will find them later on.Maybe.Lockpicks can break while trying to open a locket mid-try.

You start with somehing like 40- 50% or even even less health.Because f_ck you.Health/ammo/armor? Aside from the occasional and random finds in the fridges or robot vendors where you must afford it to buy it, yes, but you will lose popularity and eventually the game will punish you accordingly.Enemies can walk over the spiked plates on the floor, catching up with the player easilly, while he has to go around them to avoid damage.

Maybe the devloper has seen too many Saw movies, I dont know. All I want is to get something for the money I spent, and most if not all, people think the same. When I mentioned to the dev the fact that the 2nd level boss is way too hard his reply was 'lol not all games are intended for anyone'.That is not an appropriate answer for any product.

Rogue games should not just be extremely hard games based on RNG luck.Yes, the element of difficulty should be present, but it should also give you the means to beat it.Then the game transmutes to challenging, which is a different thing.Otherwise it is not a game, it is a novelty.

P.S.Dont be fooled that by the fact that Ziggurat uses magic ingame. It is not that different from Killing Room.In essence it is a rogue shooter with rooms to explore and big bosses to fight at the end of every room.

@TO KNOW US BETTER While I still enjoy the game, I can agree that it can be brutal in... a lot of places (the snowmans themselves are actually quite difficult, not just the boss). I hope there's a way to balance the game more without making things too hard or even too easy.

I, among others, wouldnt mind if the developer lowered the difficulty, especially now that there is a brutal mode added. If someone wants to get their kicks in extremely harder settings, they can be my guest, I will roll the red carpet.

But there is no reason to ignore the majority of the playerbase (who are your clients in the end) just out of what?Spite? Us mere mortals are not worthy of beating the game, according to the developer?

If a person tries an endeavor of any kind, and fails at it repeatedly, he/she starts to become annoyed because he/she does not see any progress happening in it.That is not some sophistcated psychology, that is human behavior of the most basic kind.

I think that a lot of people think the way that I do.If not, I dont mind saying so, guys.

I can agree to an extent that the bosses (After the first boss) are very difficult, and the game kicks the players ass repeatedly; however, I have found that, despite the dificulty, the player can, and will, begin to advance further and further as they play more and more.

It took me upwards of 40 tries to finally get to, and subsequently beat, the damn snow-boss, but by the time I reached around 50 playthroghs (Even before the boss's health was lowered in patch) I was able to consistantly beat that damn snowman with a variety of weapons (Takes everything you've got, but it is possible, and with positive popularity to boot).

As for the weapons, although I do have a problem with the seemingly biased weapon swapping machine (Always get a fly-swatter, never anything interesting or useful), I have also been able to make it through Floors 1 and 2 almost solely relying on my crappy starter pistol. It takes patience, and a lot of sprinting/sprint-jumping while squeezing off one or two shots here and there, but it is very possible.

As far as positives/detriments go, I have found that I am able to complete both Floor 1 and 2 with either positive or hero status (While also buying what I need while in the level). I also find that negative detriments can be easily avoided by simply not taking the risks (No wheel. No Mystery Box at the Shop, etc.) If you really feel like taking the risk sometimes, then use a coin (Heads= Try Your Luck / Tails= Leave It Well Alone) in order to make your decision.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The only room monster that I have encountered so far that I would deem to be unfair is the tag-team of frost snowmen that sometimes spawn with a room of normal showmen. I believe that these frost-snowmen fire too fast, move too fast, lightning-sidestep too fast, and almost always kill the player unless they happen to have a shotgun and luck on their side.

If I could give any advice to the dev in regards to weapons, it would be to allow the possibility (However Rare) for a player on Floors 2 or 3 to come across a GOOD weapon (Not just swatter, bat, shotgun, double smg, or rifle). This suggestion comes from the fact that many players are restrained to the first three floors for a decent amount of time as they learn and master the game.

I would also love to see the lightswitches be used for something (If they arent already, which is what it seems to be). They could allow for an advantage over a room enemy, they could lead to an achievement at the end of a Floor, or they could somehow be related to an easter-egg of sorts on each Floor.

There is also potential for game achievements to help the player in the actual game (Say they get a certain health-related achievement--they would then get a small health boost in the game as a kind of auxiliary permanant item). I believe that this would encourage a lot of players to play more, and also to play in different styles.

It would also be interesting if there was a 1:1,000,000,000 chance for a player to actually get a cool (Positive) permanant item from one of the item rooms / mystery boxes.

As a final note (Directed mainly at the developer), this game lends itself very well to in-game/ around game purchases. What I meen by this is that I believe people would be more than willing to shell out a few bucks (Especially given how cheap the actual game is) in order to attain a perk/item (Perminant) for their game. These could come in the form of a better starting pistol, a variety of helpful permanant perks (Sold seporately or bundled), or a package of positive perks that you can add to your game of choice (5 perks that can be used however the individual wants in 5 of their games). This would not only add a massive source of revenu for you as a developer (Thusly allowing you to bring this game to an even greator level, while simultaneously making a fair profit), but it would also allow people who do not want to, or simply can not, put in the time to train and master the game, the ability to enjoy the game more and to feel better while playing (Even if it is mostly a placebo).

I appologize for the crazy-long response/review, I started typing, and then just kind of kept typing... and this was the result XD

And @ Smiley:

You wont get any bad items 1st area unless you get one by yourself or mystery box.

I actually gave tips about evading the ice beams already in another thread. Its not that hard as soon as you know how.

You can actually kill the snowman even with pistol only if you are good enough. Shotgun is simply the easiest way.

Also got pawned by him at first, but its easy to take him down if you know the tricks. Even with pistol only.

1. Headshots. They seem to be a critical each time you hit him.

2. Obviously run around all the time - when he jumps for the ice rain you got a nice opening to give some extra headshots

3. his ice spitting always aims for where you are going at the moment it is fired. So moving to the left (your perspecitve) means he will spit to the right (his perspective)

If you only make 1 movement all his ice will hit you. Simply move left/right a few times - jumping also helps as he will spit up/down.

I killed him multiple times ... sawed-off shotgun is good if you have accuracy and hit all the headshots kills him really fast.
But still I had to kill with pistol once ... wasnt fun.

I mean other than git gud.
The fight is just long, but its not that hard. If you're having that much difficulty maybe this game isn't for you? Ice beams are easy to dodge, and the icicles take a bit more work, but just look up when he jumps and run to an empty area. He has plenty of lag time between that attack and his next that you don't need to bother looking at him.
