Samorost 2 - Black Screen

Hi there!

I recently purchased & installed Samorost 2 and seem to have come across a bit of an issue...

SITUATION:

- Black screen at game start.
- Sound is working.
- Cursor visible and changing shape over certain parts of the screen.
- Steam ingame-overlay still visible even after closing it.

SOLUTIONS TRIED (not working):

- Uninstalled and reinstalled game. (x3)
- Changed Compatibility Settings via local files. (Tried every available option.)
- Changed High DPI Settings according to: https://imgur.com/a/AZSb7AA

Currently running on:

HARDWARE:

Processor: AMD Ryzen 9 6900HS (x64-based) with Radeon Graphics 3.30 GHz
RAM: 32,0 GB

OPERATING SYSTEM:

Windows 11 Home
Version: 22H2
64-bit operating system

DEFAULT RESOLUTION:

2560 x 1600. No external monitor.

SIDE NOTE:
The Samorost 2 Original (2005) Macromedia Flash Player 8.0 Application works flawlessly.

Looks like it must be connected directly to your setup since none of the usual fixes worked... Have you tried forcing the game to windowed mode with alt+Enter, maybe? Do you happen to own Samorost 3 or Chuchel and do they run on your PC?

thank you for helping me out.

I have tried using the suggested 'ALT + ENTER' solution to force the game into windowed mode. Sadly, without success. I still need to exit the game via the 'SHIFT + TAB' combination.

I installed Samorost 3 (I do not own Chuchel) after reading your message. The same issues are present, that is to say identical - however, I can no longer exit the game via the 'SHIFT + TAB' combination and need to use the 'CTRL + ALT + DEL' route instead.

This is a tough one to wrap my head around..

Thanks for the info. This sounds familiar to an issue we previously dealt with in an update. Please try switching to a beta branch called "d3d9 - compatibility version" (no password required) and let me know if that changes anything.

EUREKA!

It worked. I reinstalled both games to start with a clean sheet and switched over to the 'd3d9 - Compatibility version' beta branch. Both Samorost 2 & 3 are running smoothly under this setting. Thank you! I'm really looking forward to playing both games.


To anyone reading this in the future:

I did not know what the 'beta branch switch' and 'upload build fix' was referring to when reading through the other threads. I took a wrong turn and ended up looking for them under Samorost 2's 'Properties' in the 'Local Files' section. This was my mistake.


The correct pathway is as follows:

Select: Samorost 2 in Steam Library > Click 'Manage' icon > Properties > Betas > Betas Participation > d3d9 - Compatibility Version.

(And yes - Steam achievements will work as well.)
