game causes steam to crash?

If I click play within the steam browser it causes steam to crash and the game does not start, but if I go to the local files and start the game via the application in the files the game opens and plays fine. Anyone else experienced this? Since I can still play the game it's not the biggest issue but it'd be nice to not have to do a workaround.
