I've only ever really read the visual novel with the original sprites, but I do have the PS3-ified versions of the visual novels waiting to be read. I've only ever touched those for a few minutes at most.
I think, objectively, Ryukishi's art is better. Not because the quality is good (we all know it isn't), but because the expressions the characters make really do impact the mood of the scenes. I don't think the PS3 art matches Ryukishi's in terms of expressions. It's like a.... shinier, stiffer version of Ryukishi's art. It's more appealing to look at, but not nearly as diverse.
However, the voice acting in the PS3/PS3-ified versions are definitely a huge bonus, especially when Chiru comes into play since that half was never animated.
And for the Pachinko sprites, I think...... they're alright. I don't love them, don't hate them. They're just alright.
The ps3 version is undeniably the best artstyle, but I'm not a fan of how stiffer their expressions are for the sake of looking nice - I don't really feel the same amount of emotions as I do with the original sprites. Though, yeah, voice acting makes up for that. (Also ANGE-Beatrice witch design hell yeah)
I kinda think the steam/pachinko version is a mix of the two - nicer looking art but with more expression. :'D (though it def ain't perfect, there's just some characters just Kill It for people... Whether if it's someone looking too old and another looking too off/hideous .... It's at an uncanny valley here, I suppose)
PC version strength lay in less candy eyed graphics which gives this tale more of a dark vibe.
I can eat some discomforts for that. Soo I stayed with it sometimes looking onto original.
Whatever the case I think we shouldn't be concerned around graphics. Each one gives diffrent feeling. But atmosphere stays the same, music, words plus the voice acting. Thats important to give proper impression. Art is just helpful for some situations. If I was to pick I would be jumping because each scene can be felt diffrent with each diffrent art style. It is certainly good sign and none of the art should be discouraged
I disliked how pachinko Battler looks like, but now that i get used to it, i like it. It's suitable with his voice acting. I also like how the adults look like real adults, with wrinkles etc. Not like forever-young childlike-looking 'adults'.
Really, it doesn't deserve the hate. Except the boobs.
Some saying the manga art is good, and they hate pachinko sprite because it's a 'failed imitation of the manga'. but to me, the chapter 1 art is not as legendary-level amazing as people say. Yes it's still nice, acceptable, but.. But maybe for later chapters, it gets more beautiful? I dunno because i only read the manga for several pages only. Usually mangaka always get better and better the more chapters in. I guess maybe that's the case.
And the pachinko sprite and manga art are clearly different, nobody imitated anybody. Seriously, what's up with the community, hating here and there. Kinda feel lonely because i actually like the pachinko sprite.
Except the boobs. Seriously, they need to tone that down. and i dislike pachinko game in general. Because they're just gambling and make money on people's addictions.
i guess people just have different taste, in regards of art style. Plus with some nostalgia lens, maybe.
But yeah, i need to admit that Beatrice psycho laugh in pachinko sprite looks awful/weird.. the eyes. If those eyes angles and iris position can be redrawn like in the original sprite, that'll be better.
