I've got all say for the martial artist right now. I actually just used my ninja to unlock the alternate netherworld. The ninja are hands down best class in game.
I then create a group of Majin and equip them with Staves and Magic. Since magic has the longest range when equipped with staves, they become power houses themselves. They don't have to scroll through long list of skills since I only teach them a few spells.
Giga Star : Giga Heal : Espoir : Braveheart : Magic Boost ( Low SP Cost / Fast Animation )
I bring my Majin to cave of ordeals level 3 and go to the opposite side of the room. The enemies won't even run after you over there. I then use those spells on my own monsters and level them up till they get maximum AoE and Range.
I then level them efficiently by using Giga Star with 3x3 AoE at long range.
But I always have at least one Thief and Geomancer for their unique abilities. Of coarse they were previously levelled up as Majin for the stat boosts. A Ninja is always a good addition, because they do technically offer something unique with their evasion.
They're pretty good, but they're no where near Majin-good. Even their dodge loses its lustre in the late game, where most everything dies before getting a chance to swing at you anyway.
Geomancers are from D2 onwards. You're thinking of Striders.
