Though, usually the easiest way to fill up the bonus gauge is with large geo chains in item world.
You will see a + counter above the damage counter when you attack the same enemy, this is a combo, and increases the bonus.
If there are a cluser of enemies, you can also chain the combo across multiple enemies, if you use a skill that targets more than enemy at a time.
For example, You have 5 enemies standing next to each other in a horizontal line. You could attack the first one with a couple normal attacks to weaken them, then follow up with a fire spell that hits the first three enemies, which kills the first enemy and weakens the next two. So long as the next attack in the chain hits one of those two characters, the combo will not break.
