It boosts how much they fill up the bonus gauge by attacking, I think. It's more noticeable if you have a bunch doing a chain attack on something; they don't have to do any damage to fill up the gauge, they can all be level 1s with the weakest gun weapon, just bring them out when you can ensure their safety somehow. Also attacks on enemies on invinicible tiles still fill up the gauge.

Though, usually the easiest way to fill up the bonus gauge is with large geo chains in item world.

What you should do is stock up on several really crappy bows, and if u find a level where u want to hit the bonus gauge, hand them out and have them all attack an enemy.

You will see a + counter above the damage counter when you attack the same enemy, this is a combo, and increases the bonus.

Guns actually have a higher range than bows in this game. With no downsides. (later games restrict guns to firing in a line).

If there are a cluser of enemies, you can also chain the combo across multiple enemies, if you use a skill that targets more than enemy at a time.

For example, You have 5 enemies standing next to each other in a horizontal line. You could attack the first one with a couple normal attacks to weaken them, then follow up with a fire spell that hits the first three enemies, which kills the first enemy and weakens the next two. So long as the next attack in the chain hits one of those two characters, the combo will not break.

Also note that you can also fill up the bonus gauge by attacking allies, so if you have one character strong enough to withstand it, you can have 9 Thieves attack that one character again and again to fill up the gauge without having to worry about killing all the enemies.

Meh, Etna Mode doesn't care about ally kills. Plus, you'd have to really try to kill anyone with Thieves.
