I'm not saying that to be a ♥♥♥♥ or anything, like seriously if you learn how to use them, they become great.
I will admit though, I've seen my share of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ item world layouts...
No worries, I know what you mean by how to use them. I've spent my share of endless hours camping characters out on invincibility or reverse damage squares in the item world to level grind. I just prefer a more traditional SRPG. That's what Disgaea comes in behind FFT and Tactics Ogre to me.
My favorite thing to do with the geopanels is to build up a huge chain reaction and just wipe out the map. It can't be done on all maps obviously but man it's satisfying when it can. :-)
I agree pulling off a chain reaction and decimating everyone on the map and then getting the huge end of level bonus for it always puts a huge grin on my face.
I see why they're in story mode and they don't bother me there.
But I hate them with passion in the Item world.
'cause ♥♥♥♥♥♥ effects like ennemy boost, mighty ennemy, damage 20%, damage 50%, no ranged, and even invincibility, no lifting or reverse damage can screw you quite hard when mixed or when the pattern is really hard to navigate.
And don't get me started on the ones that damage you for simply going through them.
Also most of the time you can't even set a proper chain reaction.
So I generally just skip this kind of level.
At least in Disgaea D2 you can explore the item world without dealing with the geo panels via the cheat shop.
And in Disgaea 5 the level generation tend to have them a lot less annoying than in other games.
