Not HD remaster?
What's the point in making a PC version without touching the sprites and making the game in full HD glory?
Seems unfair to ask for such a price when the game is just a lazy port.

I think so, too. You could play this version of the game with even more content for free within minutes (even on your smartphone). If it is the cheap port that it seems to be, 20$ is a rip-off imho and a purchase would only makes sense for people that really dislike any form of emulation and don't own any of the following platforms: ps2, ps3, ps4, psp, psvita, nds, 3ds.

Because spritework is a hard, ardous task that takes a pretty long time to do well and isn't cheap anymore?

The rest of the upgrades makes it pretty clear this isn't a "lazy port", nor even a "cheap port" like the person below you is saying. Just pure entitled ignorance, as far as I can see.

it's cool to see atlus/NIS games on steam (more!). for the few people that never had the chance to play it because they didn't own one of the many consoles it has been released on years ago, it might be interesting. for the rest I'd recommend one of the porable versions as this looks better on small screens and is way more convenient (plus: you safe money). Imho it's just not interesting for most people that already played the game on multiple platforms...

A collection or, as said before, a remake would have been great though

1st. The game is ported by a team who didn't work on the original version which is on systems which all have a different architecture from normal PC's and it uses an old engine which most likely can't work with HD sprites.
2nd. Like others pointed out updating the sprites to DD2 or D5 lvl would be an enormous task for a team who doesn't have a art department outside of for localization of menues and stuff.
3rd. Doing 1 and 2 would be a task of over a year work where they would most likely need to build the game from the ground, this would mean they would have to charge 40-50$ to even validate the cost it would take.

To be honest, I expected the raw game for 20$/€, to get the Artbook and Soundtrack which are legaly extremely hard to get is really a welcome addition of the deal.

And let's not forget that NIS and Atlus games are quite difficult to find a physical copy. I got Disgaea 1 by sheer dumb luck(and because I was addicted to the GBA Fire Emblem games) and I've been a fan ever since so I welcome this game here as long as the port is good like the old Final Fantasy games.

The sprites for every character were done in HD later on. There's no excuse for this even if it would take more work.

Not all of them, no, and not at all for every move. The game engine might not even support them, considering they didn't upgrade the sprites until they changed engines with Disgaea 4.

Besides, this is a port. Not an HD Remake or Remaster.

Come on... It's written on the store page. It may not be HD, but they're working on textures.

New to Disgaea PC (It's not just a port!):
Updated UI and textures
Keyboard/Mouse and controller support
Includes all content from Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness
New Steam features, such as Achievements, Cloud Saves, Badges, and trading cards

You don't get an upgrade to HD so its better to commit piracy? Dude seriously, just the chance to play this game again in its original form without the upgrades is worth the £15 price tag, the game is epic.

Aside from that like bferrari said, it has updated UI and textures, it has Achievements, Badges and trading cards. I don't know about you but I am a bit of an achievement hoe, I love achievements and when Disgaea comes to the PC I intend to buy it on day one.

Because upscaling/reworking sprites is a good way to make the game look like garbage.

You'll need serious art team for that kind of thing (if you want it done PROPERLY), I'd rather just have original game.

This. #1 complaint about the FF6 port was they ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up the sprites by trying to upscale/rework them and now they look ugly instead of suiting to the game.

Seeing how this release is pretty much them testing the waters for the viability of NIS products on Steam, I don't think they felt it worthwile to sink resources into making HD sprites for characters and classes that have yet to make their official HD debut.

Besides, it's Disgaea. Everything's pixely there.

FF5+6 are especially weird in that the monster sprites are fantastic and detailed. Why they didn't spend at least half as much effort on the character sprites (aka the only ones you'll be seeing for the entire game) is beyond me.

Man, I just played that Capcom D&D beat-'em-up the other day. Great sprites and animation (for its time, of course), but the most horrible smooth filter known to man is activated by default. That certainly makes for a strange first impression, I can tell you.

While it's true that most of the HoD crew actually have HD sprites, I wouldn't expect it for this release. Partially because the modern HD Disgaea sprites are a larger scale (which would require reworking the entire game's environments, or outright replacing them).
As others mention, this is testing the waters for NIS.
In their eyes, it would be too risky to sink a large amount of time and money completely remaking or remastering the game when they can't tell how well-received it will be or how much money will be made back. Disgaea is a niche series, for sure - and we definitely won't be seeing endorsement from certain big-names like TotalBiscuit. It's up to we Prinnies to show that it is profitable to bring the games to PC, and in doing so make them more willing to take the risks.

On a sidenote, if I recall Disgaea D2 was originally intended as a remake of HoD. It would certainly have been interesting for an HD remake to combine Disgaea D2 and Afternoon of Darkness into a single game. But that will probably remain forever in the "what ifs" section. Unless we're all still kicking in about ten years.

Dood.

it not as easy as HD MAGIC
now i know it not going to look AS bad as this but it they dont do it with care i think it will be a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up blob of a game

now i'm not saying it cant be done but it will take time and money
i jsut hope they did it right if they did it
http://www.fortressofdoors.com/doing-an-hd-remake-the-right-way/

if they remake it by hand and with love and care good job then...
if not let the fans that will give it love and care do it with mods
