You need about 280K experience to go from level 88 to 89. A level 98 kill gets you about 45K. A level 99 kill gets you more than double that, which is indeed about what a level 320 would get you!... but it's still obviously not enough to advance with, just on its own.
If you want to start levelling quickly again then you'll need to find a way to start killing tougher enemies faster. At this point your Laharl is more than tough enough to unlock every story map on his own - that'd be a good start, as some of them are much better for training than 5-3.
