Brawler and Fighter are starter melee classes, with Brawler focusing on HP/ATK and Fists, while Fighter is more ATK/SPD and Sword/Axe/Spear. Mage/Skull use magic (INT + Staff), and magic gets only better with use, in power, range, and AoE, even more so with staff mastery. SP cost limits its use at first, but it becomes less and less of a problem as you level up, to the point of being irrelevant. Cleric heals (warning: healing doesn't give exp in this Disgaea).
There are additional classes you can unlock. You can unlock most of them by having a lvl 10+ male brawler, a lvl 10+ female brawler, a lvl 10+ fighter, a lvl 10+ female fighter, and a lvl 10+ female mage. You can unlock Archer by raising bow mastery to 3+ (but guns are better imho). There are a few more classes but it's easier to clear the game before unlocking them.
Samurai has 110% aptitude in ATK and an S aptitude in Sword, Axe, and Spear. Ninja has 110% aptitude in SPD (and thus can dodge attacks more easily), 100% in ATK, high MOV and throw, and an S aptitude in Fists. Thief can steal items more easily, and his chance of stealing has a cap of 99% instead of 50%. Strider has good utility in the Item World, and is decent with a gun.
Use More Expensive Stuff bills to get better items at the shop. Add Belts, Glasses, and Shoes when you can. Use Stronger Enemies bills to adjust the level of enemies, if you want to continue to farm on a particular map with exp +50% geosymbols and/or advantageous enemy placement notably. More Counters adds +1 counter, sometimes useful for melee fighters. More Movement adds +1 MOV, which is great for everyone. Triple Exp triples the exp you get for the next enemy killed, useful if that enemy is high leveled. Stage 3-4 is one of the best stage to take advantage of it, as long as you know that tossing an enemy into another fuses them.
The higher the mana cost of the bill, the harder it is to pass it, since you need as many more positive votes.
You can bribe senators to make them like you more. The effects of bribing are permanent, not just limited to the current session. The senators will only like or dislike items based on their rarity number, so fill your inventory with cheap junk. Prioritize the senators with a high level first. You can use the Raise Military Funds bill to bribe senators since the mana cost is low, don't actually cast the vote, exit when you're done with bribing.
Most of the time, it is just faster to pass bills by force, especially late bills. If you have a high-leveled friendly senator on the front row (use bribing), you can toss opposing senators on him to increase his level over and over till the opposition has been completely assimilated.
