Item World and Pupil questions
I'm pretty new to this game, and I have a question about the item world.

How... exactly do you know what items you want to go into the world with? I've just finished Chapter 3, but only barely scraping by, as most of my battles end with Laharl bulldozing through enemies while everyone else acts as fodder, and I'm preeeeeeeeetty sure this isn't how the game was intended to be played.
So I know the Item World is where the real meat and cheese of the game is, but I'm... so baffled as to where to start with it. What items do I go into? The game suggested a little common sword at the start of Chapter 3, which I did, but then what? Is it better to go back into that sword on Floor 11? Does something else happen to it if I keep going deeper in the sword?
And what about armor? You get quite a sizeable roster of characters in Disgaea, is it even worth going into the item world for some of the low level armor?
Heck, you can even go into little healing items like ABC Gum. is that worth it??

I just need a couple hands to point me in the right direction. This game's really fun, but I'm feeling a little overwhelmed.

I'm really just not sure where to find the balance in between going to the Item World, doing the main story, what items to use for the Item World, or if I should just buy new items from the shop, or what.

... Also, while we're at it, is there any advice to give on making additional units? I've just been making some Average fighters, brawlers, and mages from Laharl's mana pool, but really it's all because I'm not sure if the mentor/pupil system really matters for who hires what and where my mana distribution should be focused.
I know levelling up units like a brawler unlocks the pugilist, but when I get said pugilist, should I just delete my low-level brawler and give the pugilist all their gear?

Any and all help is appreciated, thanks!! ;^;

well... I went into common imperial seals.

I ended Chapter 3 with the dealt 10 M damage achieve. also defeated Prinny baal.

not sure I'd recommend my route.

First of all, none of this matters to beat the story. You don't have to do any grinding, make any new units or visist the item world a second time.

Having a single powerhouse character is a perfectly valid way to beat the game and probably the easiest.

My advice is, do what you want to do. Do what sounds fun.

If you want some pointers on "effectiveness" though. Going into low rank items or anything not rare or legendary is a waste of time. You wanna get into the item world to boost an already powerful item or hunt for innocents.

Pupils are only useful to teach some skills like healing for exemple. They also boost the mentor stats very slightly, not enough to matter early on anyway. As far as units go, you might wanna get a mage or two if you want an easier time in later levels. Also, I personally find it more fun toi play with at least 4 to 6 units as opposed to a single one.

In the case of most items, there's not much point in levelling them at all. If you start out with something weak and improve it, then you'll end up with a slightly better weak item. You'll quickly find something better in the shop either way.

However, adding ten levels or so to an item doesn't take long - so if you get stuck on a story mission, and don't have immediate access to better store items, levelling the gear you've got can be a quick and easy way to get the ball rolling again. You get a better sword or whatever, but you also get a bit of hell / XP, and maybe some other cool items from the bonus gauge (which is much easier to fill in item world stages than it is in most story missions).

Even if you don't need a quick power boost, at least keep an eye on the sort of specialists each item contains. In particular, you want Statisticians (which boost XP gain), Armsmasters (which boost weapon skill gain), and Managers (which boost mana gain). If you enter an item which contains specialists, they'll appear at random during the battles - and defeating ("subduing") them not only doubles their effectiveness, it also allows you to transfer them to other, better items.

If you clump a bunch of eg Statisticians into one item, you can then merge them into one single specialist (meaning they'll take up less slots).

Higher ranked items have higher level specialists, so collecting too many eg Gladiators (boosts attack) early on is a waste of time. It's never too early to start on the ones mentioned above, though. Be aware, however, that whether they're spread over multiple items or slots, Statisticians are only effective up to a total of 300 levels per character (at which point they're getting 4x XP per kill) - ditto for Managers and Brokers. Armsmasters go up to 1900 (20x weapon skill gain per attack). Other specialists tend to have higher caps, but their effects tend not to be as important.

At least early on, you'll always want to dive at least ten levels into each item you visit, if you can - as this will net you another Gency. Eventually you'll have more of those things than you know what to do with, but in the early game it's handy to have a couple dozen in storage so you can feel free to experiment with diving into harder items. Due to their random nature, you'll sometimes come across item world levels that are highly advantageuos to you - look up the Clone Wars technique for eg.

The number of floors each item has depends on its rarity. Most notably, if you dive into a legendary weapon and make it all the way to floor 100, the final boss there will have the next rank of that weapon for you to attempt to steal. This typically isn't worth taking advantage of until you've got your hands on the near-best weapons (heck, you probably won't be able to manage it until then), but it's the only way to get hold of most of the best weapons. Make sure you keep a thief and a scout handy - the former to grab items enemies hold, the latter to re-roll geopanels to help you fill the bonus gauge. If a Legendary Cosmic Blade shows up (the rank 39 sword, and key to the rank 40 Yoshi - the best weapon in the game), you want to be able to grab it!

Regarding pupils, it's generally best to have one per mentor, and no more (otherwise you'll end up with more units than is worth levelling up). Feel free to give a mentor's pupil a pupil, and so on, but giving one unit tons of direct pupils will waste a lot of the potential benefit.

It's not unusual to have one character in your team doing all of the heavy lifting. As you advance through the game, you'll discover methods of quickly levelling other characters who fall behind - don't be surprised when one of your generics suddenly slingshots right past Laharl!

Do not delete characters unless you really have an oversupply, and try to avoid creating new ones if you can avoid it. Instead, raise old characters to rank 3 at the Dark Assembly, unlocking the option to transmigrate them - this lets you turn them into a level 1 of a new class, while keeping some percentage of their old stats and skill levels. Doing this over and over allows much more powerful characters than you would otherwise get, and how weak they were to start with is irrelevant to the power they'll end up with this way. I find a total of about ten generic characters is plenty.

Oh wow, okay!! Alright, this is all super helpful! Thank you so much!

Early on, just go to floor 10 to subdue specialists.
Your first priority is getting a level 300 statisitcian on item that boosts all stats (dark rosary, testament, etc) so you can give someone 3x exp and make leveling easier and work on getting a level 1900 armsmaster to make leveling weapon mastery go by 20x as fast.

Your early items will be obsolete pretty fast so just use them as specialist containers until you get the strongest version.

yeah. I went thru imperial seals and from the bonus lists picked up some dark rosaries and whatnot and then went thru testaments and exodus eventually.

Got enough money to upgrade the shop, unlocked cave of ordeals and used it to level and unlocked divine majins. snagged a bunch of monsters (tailrings) from Prier's map Which I had a bunch for stealing purposes Took out Baal and stole his super robot suit. Delta kicked him with a bunch of nekomata, and he died. then I marched thru the super robot suit a bunch of times

It took like 20-30 hours. at which point I did a lot of math to calculate how to get 10M damage. which took another 10 or so hours to set up.

Point being if you want to do better, just get a scout, go to the item world and do the bonus gauges. the prizes should give you enough money and other things to upgrade the shop and you'll do fine with a big shop in the main story.

I don't know if people actually recommended classes.

but you get 2 fighter (female/male) and 2 Brawler (female/male) to 10.

which should unlock a bunch of classes, Knight, Ronin, Scout, Ninja, thief, Archer comes from having bow at 3.

The Ronin is solid. the ninja is a high mobility lifter.

Personally I used some early L100 Legend weapons to bootstrap my early grind, 3000-6000ish ATK off a simple weapon makes a big boost to Wind Slayering monster crowds for experience.

Agreed on gathering Statisticians, they are amazing for power leveling.

Part of my own part to epic power involved stripping thief hand items of specialists (since they're easy to generate the desired specialists on) and using the boosted thief hands to easily steal legendary equips in item world.

To speed up Item world runs, I gathered tremendous piles of Angel Sandals and Accelerators to boost the mobility of my crew, and relied a lot on rarity-matching bonuses to squeeze as much power as possible out of my gear.

I just used Lift chains.

I don't know what you're doing to get through 100 levels on any item early on, unless your definition of "early" is post clearing cave of ordeals 3.

Using low-ranked Legendaries to get legend rarity jackpot bonuses for an early boost. Early in this case is "before we even have to fight Vulcanus", by that time we have a slowly growing large pile of legends we use to bootstrap our stats enough to get to the bottom of low-rank Legends (levels there cap around 200-300ish but there are ways to cheese levels to that point near the Maderas bossfight). Heck, I'd even use a COMMON L30 Imperial Seal to bootstrap the early game, since stripping speciailists from low-rank items isn't hard.

the item levels up just as quickly if you run to the exit. move the gatekeeper off the last tile with a brawler fist move.

If you run thru 100 floors and just kill the item kings you'll get a massive item.

if you run thru 100 floors and don't kill the item kings its still pretty massive.

but yeah, just run down 100 floors of something, don't kill anything. you don't need to.

Even with just a rank 1 legend item most basics will give about +3000 in a desired stat that you jam full of specialists and kill all the item kings/generals/gods. Had a +3500 Short Sword that bootstrapped me enough to get some L100 rank 3s, then after building a full set of L100 matched-rarity items on my main power character I was able to start really building bigger and bigger items.

Making my first L100 weap a sword also let me start powerleveling by Wind Slayer farming.
