That being said, the weapon types are sometimes more important than class. Classes like warriors, ninjas, thieves, etc. don't even have inherent abilities; only those learned from weapon mastery.
With just the base classes, I would say get: a Warrior with an axe, a Mage of any color, a second Mage (of a different color) that you get a few levels on, then transmigrate to a Cleric so it has some ability to do damage (nearly impossible to level otherwise), and a Brawler so you can move enemies if you can't throw them (because of a tile or what have you). This should leave you in pretty good shape if you run Pleinair with a gun, Etna with a spear, and Flonne with a bow. Spears are fairly weak compared to swords, but they give you amazing mobility with its abilities and the ability to attack two spaces away.
As you get further into the game, you'll unlock things like Archers, Majins, Ninjas, Scouts, etc, and you'll find a good purpose for them later on. I would also argue that the three Prinnys to start should tide you over on monsters until a little later when you unlock a good one. Then I'd recommend transmigrating a prinny to one of those, but only after it's had a good amount of levels.
There's no "right" way to do Disgaea- I played through and had 28 people in my roster (mostly all the same level), one of my friends had about 12-15 characters and focused on leveling the story characters more heavily, while finally my other friend chose a generic Warrior and solely power-leveled her (ignoring all other characters).
If you're looking to do a new game plus instead of immediately going into the extra content after your first cycle, I'd recommend going the route of leveling a bunch of side characters. The reason being, when you start a new cycle, you lose your story characters until you acquire them in the story again. But again, all personal preference.
Mid game: 3rd and 4th tiers of those same units, as well as the same tiers of Lady Samurai, Ninja, Archer, Magic Knight, and some other unlocks I might be forgetting. Monsters found up to Chapters 8-10? Prism versions of Mage/Skull?
Late game: Up to the 5th tiers of the above units, and perhaps the EDF soldier. All remaining monsters found in the story. Stuff that doesn't need you to hit Level 70 or higher. EDF soldier unlocks when someone has 30 Gun mastery, so you won't likely have this much until the end of the game. Perhaps the Galaxy Mage/Skull?
Post game: 6th tiers of the above units, as well as Angel, Majin, EDF soldiers, and all other monster types. Rare/Legendary exclusive Item World floors, fighting the dark assembly... aside from the EDF, this is stuff that would call for Level 100~3000 to unlock.
Basic monster classes aren't worth using though. In any of the Disgaea games really.
Which Dragon type is the flaming type?
Oh, duh, thanks - I rememeber that now. :) Sorry to have so many threads, there is just so much to know and I am having such a good time with the game. :)
They also have my fave battle cry for a special - EAT IT, DUDE! heh
And they make such a lovely (and large) explosion when thrown.
Get a ninja, thief, and healers with attack magic early as well. Leveling the thief will really pay off so give him excellent gear.
