Putting aside NIS's other titles (they have a few along the lines of Disgaea), Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy Tactics come to mind.

There are three games in the FFT series. The gameplay improved over time, but the challenge level and story quality drop a fair bit. By the time of the third game (FFT A2) it's "boy goes to a new world, writes a book, and goes home again"; the main character is all but completely superfluous to any plots that occur.

I'd recommend Hyperdimension Neptunia, which is available on both Steam and GOG. It doesn't have the free class system or the timesink of item customization that is Item World (which I consider the best parts of Disgaea), but I find the combat system much more engaging. Max level goes up to 999 (no transmigrations either), there is new game +, and a lot of optional grinding if you're into that.

My main complaint is that the fourth wall is almost nonexistant, but I'm not playing it for the story anyway :)

The argarest of war series here on steam as well. It's actually the closest you will find. But like any JRPG they aren't for everyone.

Disagea is unique in its design in that in that it catered for players grinding to absurd levels of power and in fact encouraged it.

Final Fantasy Tactics is my favorite SRPG. It's available on several Sony consoles and you should be able to find it for cheap. I prefer the updated War of the Lion edition for the added jobs you can pick up, but you can't go wrong with either version. If you like Mechs there is the Front Mission series, or Vanguard Bandits. Tactics Ogre and Fire Emblem are other good fantasy SRPGs. There are many others. Sadly the more Japanese style SRPGs aren't as widely available on PC. Your best bet is with Sony systems (PSP, PS1/2, Vita) or Nintendo handhelds (GBA, DS, 3DS).

If you're looking for another SRPG, I could only tell you about ones you've already heard of. If you mean the leveling aspects - piccolo255 mentioned the Neptunia series already, but Mugen Souls and/or Mugen Souls Z are basically exactly inbetween Disgaea and Neptunia, taking character leveling / usage / generation from the former and most of the gameplay from the latter.

Mugen Souls and Mugen Souls Z have a similar 'character building and rebirth' system, as for Disgaea-likes, there's Makai Kingdom and La Pucelle Tactics which both came out around the same time as Disgaea, also made by Nippon Ichi. La Pucelle Tactics even features RosenQueen, Laharl, Etna and Flonne, though both Makai Kingdom and La Pucelle Tactics are extremely rare PS2 games that so far haven't been ported to anything else from what I know. Could cost a pretty penny to get hold of them.

As for similar but not quite SRPGs/JRPGs, there's also Trinity Universe on PS3, an under-appreciated gem featuring cross-over characters from many anime games, Etna, Flonne and Prinny included, Cross Edge which was ok, also featuring Etna, though it's tricky to get hold of due to the whole 'games featuring the word edge' debacle back when it came out... hmm... Agarest Zero, 1 and 2 which are both available on Steam, and another PS3 game, Resonance Of Fate by Sega, a steampunk SRPG with some pretty unique features and combat system.

Also Trinity Universe has the greatest theme ever:

Hopefully Nippon Ichi will be porting Disgaea 3, 4, 5 and D2 to Steam too in the future.

<rant>Just wonderful. I checked Mugen Souls and Mugen Souls Z, they seem like games I'd like and they're even on sale now, but Steam region-blocks them here in Japan. Same thing with Fairy Fencer F and most of other Japanese games. Probably has to do with consoles being much more popular than PC gaming over here and game companies wanting to keep it that way. It's ridiculuos. Since I don't have any consoles, the only way to play those would be to pirate them, which is too much trouble to bother with. So I guess they want me to do without and play something else, like Grim Dawn. After all, who needs more customers? They obviously don't. Yes, I'm bitter about this.</rant>

Sorry for the rant. I tried searching for some of the above recommendations on Steam, since I really like this type of games :(

Disgaea, Hyperdimension Neptunia and Agarest are some of the very, very rare non-indy JRPG games on Steam that are actually available in Japan. I would like to suggest more, but I literally can't :krolm:

OK....TC is american right? I mean if you speak japanesse theres the

super robot wars series.
Fire Emblem series.

Nippon ichi titles. they all play more or less like disgaea.

Those are most of the currently going series in the genre.

Fallout Tactics exists. Wasteland 2 exists. Squad based RPGs.... S is strategic right?

Final Fantasy Tactics. Tactics Ogre.

Can thing of a bunch of titles from the SNES/PS1 Era. Which is when this sort of game was a thing before mass effect and the cover based shooters phase. Not sure where you'd go to get these aside from pirating.

Vandal Hearts. Vanguard Bandits, Shining Force

Speaking of "cover based", there's the XCOM series. The newer titles play a bit differently to the old, but all mainline titles are excellent turn-based strategy games.
