Because you'll have to train it up from scratch, and if you want to teach it any spells, then you'll need to train it some pupils, too. It's a lot of work to hang on to an outdated class.
Of course. Any unit can sustain itself with heals, a bit of extra long range splash is often handy for tapping geo symbols, and it's not like my warriors are going to remain warriors forever.
It also, in turn, allows their mentors to learn spells, minimising the amount of "actual" spellcasters I need to level up.

Certainly it's not going to receive any official balance tweaks, if that's what you're asking - this PC release is the fourth port the game's had without any obviously intentional changes in that area. Speaking about a title that's around 14 years old now.
