Have Maps Be Really Been Redesigned
So first of all Turok 2 is one of my FPS of all time. I could go into details but that's not the point.

Anyway, I am excited to see a Remastered version of the game, and have quickly been looking to buy it. However, I remember when the first came out it receieved a lot of negativity. So being cautious I decided to read reviews (specifically the negatives).

One that seems to be common is there is a complaint the maps have been changed. For those who have played, is this really the case? I would hope a remaster would simply clean up the game and re-release NOT change.

This piece alone here is a factor of whether I buy the game, or try and find the old Turok 2 for PC disk (and hope it doesn't have that aim snap back N64 had that drove me insane ... since I forgot if it did)

I can't speak for item placement changes, but I listed out all the immediately noticeable level design changes here if you're curious http://steamcommunity.com/app/405830/discussions/0/135512133545298495/

It's very little that was changed overall

Yes there are some changes and quality of life additions. The QoL stuff can all be disabled, and the un-altered maps will be released at some point when the devs are done working on getting the mod tools finalized.

Some do seem a little more noticable then others. I know Lair of the Blind is the one people complain the most of. I Kind of want the original because I used to become lost and now want to see if I can fix that is the problem

I am kind of hoping for this, but not holding my breath. If it does happen then you know I'll pick the title up, but I am see they did alter them

Quasar is a dedicated mapper. He said he'd do it for turok 1 and he did. He said he'll do it for 2. I trust he will.

Perfect, I'll have to keep an eye out for their work then

Then again, he's also the one who made a mod that restored the humvee backstab bug in turok 1. Lol

I never played the original, so I don't recall that bug

It was a bug from the earlier versions of the turok 1 port. Let you one shot humvees if you hit them in the back with the knife. Great stuff. It was eventually fixed, but Quasar put a mod on the workshop that added the bug back in.

I feel like an invisible force is calling to me to reply in this thread...

Yeah, the levels were changed. The physical layouts have been altered for level 1 (two of the areas are now connected instead of being separated by a portal, and there is an all-new courtyard), level 2 (several mission objective areas have been clumsily thrust into the main path, now unavoidable and unmissable), level 4 (underwater maze simplified, some alterations in the end bits) and I think level 5 near the end? Though maybe not.

What isn't apparent on the map changes is how much key items such as keys, switches and such have been moved into the main path. Sometimes from a side area which becomes pretty much pointless, sometimes literally from around a corner.

I've played the remaster through several times and enjoyed it immensely thanks to the combat, but the changes HAVE been a massive disappointment on many levels (not ingame levels, but, well, you get what I mean). Do note however that my review for this game is pretty thoroughly positive, and I don't for a second regret my purchase (even without the idea of the money going towards possibly bringing Turok 3 and others closer to steam). But the level changes prevent this from being the definitive version for me, which for now is still the old PC port.

I'm also really, really hoping Quasar will come through for us and upload unchanged levels to the eventual workshop. Though as with T1 I firmly believe that a remaster such as this should include them in the main game without any need for mods (and launching through the editor, bleh), if it's the best we can get, I will absolutely take it, gladly.

(cue Snek?)

Honestly while I would love the old levels, I can see why they did these changes. Turok 2's biggest critique was the levels being too confusing and winding. I think if the developers of the game came back today, they probably would have redesigned them a bit and added some landmarks as well.

I don't think the levels stop this from being the best Turok 2 experience. Its fine if anyone disagrees but I think mod support, 60FPS, tons of QoL changes, proper FOV, and better mouse control more than makes up for some small level changes.

While i agree that releasing the original levels would be great, what i really want is kex editor to be officialy release. Once it happens be prepare for a completely new campaign i want to make :steamhappy:

I was planning to make stuff for Turok 1 but the editor turned out to be full of arbitrary rules you had to follow and after reading the manual it seemed like a mess not worth getting into. Maybe this time it'll be better?

You wish.

Go look up how to activate the existing level editor and check out how it works.
